Cleaning my Hiwatt Custom 50

Getting this thing ready for probable eventual sale, and it's rather crusty. It's sat in the former owner's dusty garage for the better part of 35+ years. I've read a few things about cleaning Tolex, but I'm wondering; is there anything specific about Hiwatts that I need to keep in mind while cleani...

Re: 1980 DR-504 needs TLC

OK, I've tried to post 3 times, but the website times out on me every time, so I'll keep this one short and sweet, with no pictures. Got new capacitors. One power tube kept red-plating, so I got a new pair. Sounds great, but not what I need, will be selling. The end. Maybe if I'm in the mood later, ...

Re: 1980 DR-504 needs TLC

Yes, the white glue isn't as "aggressive" as some other adhesives. Worst comes to worst, you can always re-glue the labels back on if they fall off again a few years (or decades) from now! Other options may be found at luthier supply houses: -hide glue -fish glue Both are water soluble, d...

Good to know, thank you. At this point, I'm going to have to wait for a tax return to get new caps, so it won't be for another month or two. Can't wait!

Re: 1980 DR-504 needs TLC

Thanks for the suggestion, I thought of that too, but I was worried that the glue might not be "sticky" enough, and that kind of glue does dry out over time. But then again, so did the original glue, LOL.

Re: 1980 DR-504 needs TLC

Ha! Yes, I should see how it sounds first. My pedigree is in the heavier genres, so I'm only hoping for enough grit to work with. Without grid stoppers, I imagine it can get a bit "spitty" at higher-gain settings, so that was my idea to smooth things out without losing grind. For the stick...

1980 DR-504 needs TLC

Hello all. As I said in my "Introducing myself" post, I have recently acquired a 1980 DR-504, serial# 14947. The previous owner said the last time he played it many years ago, it made a buzzing noise and quit, and never got around to fixing it since then. I have an Accurate Instrument Co. ...

Just sayin' hi

Hello all, I just acquired a "Custom Hiwatt 50", AKA DR-504. Serial# 14947. The previous owner says the last time he played it many years ago, it made a buzzing noise, then quit. I've never even tried out a Hiwatt before, so I'm looking forward to getting it up and running, then testing it...
