Re: Introduce yourself

Hi guys! I should have started posting here I realize but I guess I was too excited about logging into a Hiwatt forum... My name is Franz. I love guitars and amps. Tube amps, that is! I'm very happy to have found this nice forum after looking up info about Hiwatts and stumbling upon Mark Huss's webs...

Is it because of the KT88s ??
Yes!!! :D Those tubes have some serious mojo. A sort of sonic 3D quality!

About my '72 DR201!

I have so many questions to ask about it that I figured I might as well start a new topic! :D So here goes for a couple of easy ones! 1/ Being used to drain filter caps before I even start looking in an amp, I was quite surprised to notice that my caps were almost empty voltage-wise (< 15volts) with...

Re: The Stack!

Yeah it definitely looks "Rock!" People think I must be a rock god when they see that stack, then they hear me play :) Haha Olsvik! I'm sure you're being too modest about your playing. How can someone with enough taste to choose a Hiwatt as a battlehorse not have as much "flair"...

Re: First post!

Thanks for the info, Doc! Mine is #2740, so they are real close and should have identical wiring. I spoke to the former owner and he told me that he got the amp that way and that he tried to wire it back like yours but that the result was a horrible screeching sound... I also found this sche...

Re: First post!

Ok Doc! Will do asap. It's been a hard day of shuffling yesterday and I'll let it rest a bit. But I think it's easy enough to see that two pieces of wire are soldered in an X-shape between the lugs in position 11 and 14 starting from the left.

Re: The Stack!

Great looking stack!!There is something that screams "rock" about those, huh? But I'd be happy with just half of the same!

Re: First post!

I noticed a strange mod on my tone stack board. It definitely does not look stock. On the pic, you'll notice that on lugs position 11 and 14, there might have been some component that is now missing. Instead, the top lug no.11 is hard wired to bottom lug no.14 and bottom lug no.11 to top lug no.14. ...

Re: First post!

Dave, thanks again for your help and warm welcome. I just went ahead and flipped those toggles! Oohhh boy! She's sure is alive now! The old tubes got insanely hot before the newly installed set (Russian Gold Lions) and there was rattle in one of the bottles (yes, I know, not good! but hey, 3 of them...

Re: First post!

I have yet another question. I noticed something odd. Upon biasing the 2 innermost tubes (I used a Biasprobe installed on the 3rd tube from the left), I get positive values in ma and the trim pot is almost full clockwise to reach the 35ma target. But for the 2 outermost tubes (Biasprobe installed on...

Re: First post!

Each trim pot controls bias for one pair of KT88's. If one isn't doing much, perhaps that's the weak link in the chain. Be sure to check bias on both inner and outer pairs. Thank you for your quick response, Dave! I'll proceed at once. (Note to myself: the "left pot" controls the 2 outerm...

Re: First post!

Thank you for your input, Dave! I will try a quartet of new KT88s I had waiting "just in case". Can you tell me why there are 2 trim pots on my amp, each seemingly hooked up to the 2 middle power tubes? I biased using the one on the right side when those pots are facing me (i.e.: amp upsid...

First post!

Hi guys! This is my first post on this forum. Thank you for letting me in. Although I have been playing the guitar for quite a while and owned many amps over the years, I am a neophyte with regards to Hiwatt amplifiers. I'm sure I will learn a great deal with your kind help. I recently acquired a 19...
