Re: Custom 50 (1981) - post repair advice

Any suggestions for Philly based techs? I can't think of anyone more qualified than mhuss... Try swapping the power tubes with a cheap pair (eg. JJ E34L) to see if conditions change. Unfortunately, your Mullards may have already been damaged, but there's no sense in risking anything further. If you...

Re: Custom 50 Combo Amp Repair Advice

I can turn the Master up to 10 o'clock and the Bright volume to 10 o'clock and the amp really isn't that loud (a higher than bedroom levels). How quickly does your amp get blisteringly loud? Something's not right there... I've never *had* to run my Master Volume over Noon (with Norm and Bright at 2...

Re: Best current tubes for early '70s DR-103?

Looks like the TAD EL34B STR specs slightly higher on Screen Voltage capacity, but I haven't personally tried them. The budget route would be JJ E34L (not EL34) but you may want to order the Burned-in option to weed out any weaklings.

Hi Michele! I was able to access the images if I copied and pasted them from the "Reply" window. Let's see if these direct links work better: https://cdn1.imggmi.com/uploads/2019/12/11/c5e87b634fbd78632a8b3c7a44cb68da-full.jpg https://cdn1.imggmi.com/uploads/2019/12/11/60a5952e68cb23e311a0...

Re: WEM CABINET & CRESCENDO DAY

My first post on this forum... Welcome! You are fortunate to have found those speakers mounted inside a cabinet. Crescendos which have been shipped loose do not tend to fare well, due to their extremely heavy magnets and relatively fragile aluminum frames. Dr. HI-TONE has seen more of these items t...

Re: Unknown wattage 125669 speaker

I'm mainly interested in knowing what power output I should expect from this and what vintage it is. Well, Fane Date Codes changed a lot, but I'm pretty confident "85" is the production year. As to the label differences from the other post, there's a year between the two and that wouldn't...

I couldn't verify a schematic to save my life, but I have confidence in what mark has posted on hiwatt.org. Where is your information coming from?

Re: Introduce yourself

Welcome Patrick - you're off to a good start!

Photos have to be reduced in size, otherwise the forum's database would get bogged down. Try resampling to 640 x 480 pixels, at 72dpi. That should make it under the threshold.

Re: Mystery Fane Speakers

I guess they were rated at 16 ohms (wired in parallel for 8 ohms net) and 60 watts a piece. IMHO, that was on their best day, going downhill with a tailwind ;-) . I typically stay under half the original rating for vintage speakers but (to keep the automotive metaphor going), YMMV. If you like them,...

Re: Mystery Fane Speakers

Not sure I can help, other than to observe: Manufactured in 1979. Appear to be smooth cones. That, in addition to the PA column-style format make me suspect they may have whizzer cones, for extended high frequency response. Those typically "bark" a bit when driven hard for guitar. For keys...

I never tried but, would a set of Ernie Ball "pop-ins" work?
