Re: How to Install Adjustable Bias on Hylight Era DR103

Hello again,
By a 1/2 watt trim pot, do you mean half a watt or 1 or 2 watts? The higher the better?
Also, would you rather use a 1 Meg or 2 Meg pot?
Thank you in advance,
Matthias

Re: How to Install Adjustable Bias on Hylight Era DR103

And definitely plan on using that amp. I don't have the money and guitar skills for a second Hiwatt. On the other hand, I also tend to appreciate keeping it the way it is. I'll try Ted's mod first and see what happens.
Thank you all for your input.

Re: How to Install Adjustable Bias on Hylight Era DR103

What's the difference between both? (sound, reliability...)
And do you check your tubes bias current in your unmodded Hiwatts?

Re: How to Install Adjustable Bias on Hylight Era DR103

Hey Doc, So Groove Tubes EL34M would be your recommendation if I finally decide not to mod my amp? I've seen they are three types of GT EL34M: low, medium and high. Which ones would you recommend in a hiwatt? If I try this route first, would you guys still advise me to check the tubes bias current w...

Re: How to Install Adjustable Bias on Hylight Era DR103

Thanks Mark, I'm still hesitating between modding my vintage Hiwatt with Ted's mod and leaving it the way it is. Are there rugged enough new production tubes for unmodded Hiwatts out there? I heard about the Winged C and GT EL34M being good. What about the TAD EL34B STR "mullard inspired tubes&...

Re: How to Install Adjustable Bias on Hylight Era DR103

Hello again. Thanks for the imput. I made a quick search on bias probes an found the Weber Bias Rite and the Quadstage BiasPro quite interesting products. Any feedback on these? Ted, with the bias mod you suggest, you still need to find matched tubes isn't it? I understand you canno't adjust the bia...

Re: How to Install Adjustable Bias on Hylight Era DR103

Hi again,
Thank you for your replies.
Here in France we've got 230V so I set my Hiwatt on 240V. Does it mean we have less problems here in Europe with vintage Hiwatts than in the US?
What kind of good measurements tools (bias probes, etc...) would would recommend?
Thank you in advance,
Matthias

Re: How to Install Adjustable Bias on Hylight Era DR103

Ted,
Which power tubes are you able to use now?
I heard good things about older production Winged "C" and GTEL34M.
Would you recommend other tubes?

Re: How to Install Adjustable Bias on Hylight Era DR103

Thanks Ted for your detailed reply. I'm still a bit confused on how I should proceed to adjust the bias. As I'm french, I'm not really familiar with the english technical words. The mod seems simple enough to install myself but maybe I should speak with a tech here about biasing. Thank you again. An...

Re: How to Install Adjustable Bias on Hylight Era DR103

Hi there, I acquired a 76 Hiwatt DR103 and need to replace the power tubes that are extremely old. I really can't decide which way I should go. 1. Keep it unmodified and find strong enough tubes 2. Make Ted's mod which seems quite simple and uninvasive 3. Make MHuss bias circuit mod I'm really not a...

Re: Advice for tubes in a 76s Hylight DR103

Ok, let's try to make a more precise question. I'm pretty sure I'll try the tubes I described except for V1. I know that's where I should put the best tube but I really don't know what to choose. How does a Mullard CV4004 would compare to a Mullard ECC83 in that place? Any other favorite tube for V1...

Advice for tubes in a 76s Hylight DR103

Hi everyone, I'm new to the board and recently acquired a nice 76s Hylight DR103. I replaced the caps but still want to change the tubes. It came with sovteks I don't appreciate much. What would you recommand as preamp and power tubes? From earlier threads, I was thinking about putting: V1: A Mullar...

Re: Introduce yourself

Hi, My name is Matthias. I'm from France and consider myself a beginner guitarist. Although I like a lot of artists' music, I admire David Gilmour a lot. Pink Floyd/Gilmour music touches me really deep. So now I guess you all know how I became interested in Hiwatts. I became so interested that I bou...
