Lucky me ???
Hi Guys,
I was looking for fanes and I found this morning some NOS FANE 122/140 50W for 200€ both... Seems a good deal ?

Do you confirm this is a good deal ?
Cheers,
Fabien

mark: Do you say that because of the dust caps? I've got some Sound CIty Fanes that look the same:mhuss wrote:Those cones do not look original.

Fabien: They look extremely clean. Have they been in boxes all their lives? See if you can get cone cones (remember, they may be hidden close to the voice coil). They should be Pulsonic-type (something like 40 102 006/). Also, very there is no voice coil rub. These models seem vulnerable to that. But, if they've been in boxes and never used, they should be good.
I've paid about that price in "the good old days" for sloppy, used ones. I guess 200 Euros for a very clean pair is fair. Of course, it never hurts to offer less and see what happens .

Hi Mark, Hi Dave,
Yes, they are absolutely new and never used, stored in their boxes (You can see the boxes in the first pic I think). The guy is a speaker collector (don't know if it it the right term), he also sells brand new FANE Crescendo 130W 18"... He was buying them in the past for guitar, PA systems back in the time.
You're right, it may be more safe to ask for a pic of the cone with code, thanks for the idea.
Between the Carlsbro's Fanes & those, which one will be the nearest to 122231 ? Are they really worth the price ?
Regards,
Fabien

Re: Lucky me ???
The unbranded ones would be closer to 122231 Fanes. If they are truly new in box, I would be tempted at that price.billou_35 wrote: Between the Carlsbro's Fanes & those, which one will be the nearest to 122231 ? Are they really worth the price ?
Note that the aluminum dust caps might make them sound a bit brighter, but you should be able to adjust that with the Treble and Presence controls.

Re: Lucky me ???
I just called the guy with the 122/140 speakers, I will send me pics of the cone code late tonight... He hardly read 1021/11, he's not sure about the codes... Sounds like pulsonic or something like this, am I right ?
Thanks again Guys, I really appreciate your dedication...

Re: Lucky me ???
Another point, your speaker Dave seem to have cork (is that the right name ? This thing used to close red wine bottle, sorry for the reference, it is cultural... ) around the speaker or maybe is it paper / cardboard. On these "new" ones from '72, it is foam, is it normal ? I thought there was only cork at this time on Celestion, FANE and others, hope I'm wrong...

Re: Lucky me ???
Yes. That would be an appropriate code for an original cone from that era.billou_35 wrote:He hardly read 1021/11, he's not sure about the codes... Sounds like pulsonic or something like this, am I right ?
The term we'd use is "gasket". But, what do we know? Our wine bottles have screw-off caps !billou_35 wrote:(is that the right name ? This thing used to close red wine bottle, sorry for the reference, it is cultural... )
Paper/cardboard could have been original. Look at the picture of mine and you'll see a paper gasket. Note, though, that mine is white (not black, like the ones in your pics) and has the date code stamped on it. Either way, yours could still be legit. Those dustcaps look uniquely original. I don't think I've ever seen a reconed Fane with those exact aluminum caps. Especially not looking as crisply installed as those.

Thanks for the info...OldSchoolDave wrote:The term we'd use is "gasket". But, what do we know? Our wine bottles have screw-off caps !
So seems really like some real NOS FANE and then well worth the price & the tone ?OldSchoolDave wrote:"Paper/cardboard could have been original. Here is the link with update with both cone code :

Dave, could you please give me the details of your FANE speaker ? There are no classical FANE stickers on them so no info on product reference, Gauge number, Impedance, the guy knows the reference by heart but... well, I'd like to be sure they are 50W 15Ohms...

Re: Lucky me ???
A pair of truly NOS cast frame Fanes is a rare find. The cone codes are perfect. I would be very tempted if they were on this side of the pond.billou_35 wrote: So seems really like some real NOS FANE and then well worth the price & the tone ?
Ask if he has a Digital Multi Meter to connect to the leads. Have him photograph the reading. DCR should read around 12 ohms for a 15/16 ohm Impedance speaker. Similar speakers I've seen have been rated 40 watts, not 50.billou_35 wrote: Dave, could you please give me the details of your FANE speaker ? In fact, if the seller is correct about the model number - and, if my information is correct, those would have been made for Hylight Electronics, with a 12,000 gauss magnet, a 40 watt rating and 15 ohm impedance. Perhaps stickers were applied after they shipped? The magnet cover looks identical to some Sound City Fanes I have.

And they got the 122231 "Mojo" tone in them ? Well worth the price and tone ?OldSchoolDave wrote:In fact, if the seller is correct about the model number - and, if my information is correct, those would have been made for Hylight Electronics, with a 12,000 gauss magnet, a 40 watt rating and 15 ohm impedance. Re: Lucky me ???
No guarantees - but they should be close.billou_35 wrote: And they got the 122231 "Mojo" tone in them ? Well worth the price and tone ?
Ask how the seller came to know the model number without the speakers being so labeled.
Dave
Re: Lucky me ???
Thank you Dave... Do you know if two of them will be enough for a cranked Hiwatt custom 50... I guess it will be a bit ok but with no big margin... 50W clean makes I guess nearly 80W - 90W cranked ? 2 of those speakers makes 80W... should be good.OldSchoolDave wrote:No guarantees - but they should be close.billou_35 wrote: And they got the 122231 "Mojo" tone in them ? For the model, he told me he knows what they are because I remembered for which gear he bought them but I'm not 100% confident... Anyway, 40W or 50W, if the tone is good, I don't really care...

Re: Lucky me ???
In that case, you should be happy with them.billou_35 wrote: Anyway, 40W or 50W, if the tone is good, I don't really care...
Unlike most Fanes I've come across, these don't already have hundreds of hours of use. I should think they'd be able to keep up with your DR504.

Re: Lucky me ???
Hi Dave, I found this old topic with information from you :
viewtopic.php?f=11&t=1106
It really seems like these are not 122140 but 122190 (as you mentioned already) without the rear cover on the magnet and without stickers... They should be Sound City 40W 15Ohms... Anyway, if they are close to 122231 and brand new, I guess 200€ the pair is a fair price...
