1969 Laney

I didn't come across Laney amps until their AOR series.

Have never seen a "lay down" Partridge before. Very interesting. That could be a very nice amp. Is the asking price reasonable?

That's one of the earliest models with top mounted controls.

I owned a 100w Supergroup with same motif and aesthetics, but with bottom mounted controls, like so:




Internally, the amp is basically a copy of a circa '67 Marshall circuit, but obviously uses Partridge transformers. IIRC, Tony Iommi's early sound was a Laney Supergroup with all controls at '10' and a Rangemaster. The Laney 4X12 cabs were fitted with Goodman (25w) speakers.

Dave ,the pictures were takin from somewhere on the net but he has the same ,
He's asking $1300 maybe negociable with vintage Mullards.
The laydown Partridge reminds me of an old JTM 45.......nice!!
He's selling because it's an in your face
British sound and he's not used to that
kind of tone or is not ready yet !! Hi! Hi !

Apparently , Mark Knopfler played Momey for nothing with a Laney but I dont know which model.

I have to see and hear it first and then I'll report back.

I never liked the look of top mounted amps but I must say that whats inside though !

I own that exact same Laney, mine's a 68. It's pretty much a JTM 50 with Partridge transformers, pretty cool amp. Phil

I should go there tonight or tomorrow to try the amp,
I'm very curious about trying it but I'm having my Sound City fixed by someone
here on the forum and I would love to have him build me a VHR 50 JP amp
after the SC is fixed so If I dont make a move ,I'll let everyone here know

Dave !....I just came back from the road test and Man does this amp sound good ,nothing like what I've heard last night on youtube about the Supergroup 100's that seemed to sound a little more harsher!

I also thought it was a similar amp that the seller had and took pictures from the net to sell his but it is the amp
that he bought from the same link that you've mentionned .
The amp crunches like a Plexi with nice compression from
the original Mullards and a little Hiwattish mid push . The amp has all the bass you need and all the treble you need
and I could make it go into singing leads with a nice feedback at the end ,I was impressed !
I was waiting for something cleaner due to the fact that it has Partridge but it really gets into British crunch-land
with a lot less headroom than a Hiwatt .

I dont think I'm gonna take it ,wrong timing for me and I really would like to have a JP

He seems to be a calm and nice person but was not interested in going lower than $1300 cause he paid $1800 for it including shipping and customs taxes.

The reason I'm giving him a push is that he seems passionnate and for someone buying something that far
without hearing it and then finding out that it's not for him and loosing time and money ,well I think I should pass it along.

Thanks for letting us know how it sounds, Louis! I always wanted one of these, probably because of the Iommi reference. I guess it's a loud 50w, right? Would probably make a nice smaller rig compared to a DR103.

Can you tell us more about the amp, please? What guitar do you use, what's the sound in comparison with a Hiwatt .. ?

I'm seriously considering one and then running it in stereo with my Hiwatt.

(although I'm not sure stereo rigs with 'different flavoured' amps work that well??)

Well, even the 50w doesn't sound 'small'

These amps basically sound quite a bit like a plexi Marshall Super Bass. This is not by accident, as they are an obvious copy of that circuit. They deliver a large sound field, with not as much apparent gain as a Marshall Super Lead, but with more emphasis on lower frequencies.

I don't know recall the internal voltages in the 50w, but the 100w PT gives around 600V to the plates and screens of EL34s, which makes it hard on power tubes.

Well ,the amp doesn't behave like a Hiwatt ,it's more like a Plexi with 20% of Kerrang !
Very touch sensitive and awesome feedback at the end of a power chord,very nice attack and bite too ,
when I played the amp ,I was impressed !
The amp should get some pot clean-up though.

Definitely more in the Marshall camp, but it's got it's own cool thing going on. I can't remember exactly what the B+ is on mine, it's well over 500v though. My Esquire sounds exceptionally good into the Laney through a 71 Marshall cab with 30 watt Celestions. I don't have any of my Hiwatt cabs at home right now but I remember that it sounded really good through Fanes. Phil
