SE4122 with Fanes but not 122142

Hello all,

first post in this great forum of yours. I have recently bought a good condition SE4122 with original Fanes to go with my DR504. Its rated 150 Watts with 16 Ohm impedance. I decided to open it up and after doing some research (that brought me to this forum) it appears that the 4 Fane speakers I have are the "wrong" ones. The high end is very extended and although in the room it sounded interesting, it doesn't translate very well on the recording. It sounds nothing like my celestions in other cabinets and I mean like it was made in a different planet all together. The speaker model I have is 122170 and in the pictures I have attached, you can see it has a horn-like cone.

What do you recommend I do to get "that" Hiwatt sound? I've searched for 122142s with no luck. Are there any speakers made today that will give me that sound?

Those speakers were intended for Organ use. The whizzer cone extends the high frequency response. I have a Hiwatt cab loaded with whizzer cone Goodmans and it sounds very good for bass and for clean guitar. Those speakers don't break up warmly, though.

For recording, you should place the mic(s) further back than normal. This will help gather the aggregate sound of both cones.

Speaker options vary by continent. What brands are readily available to you?

I'm just wondering what will give me the classic Hiwatt sound. I live in the US. Is there a manufacturer that produces a product today that can give me "that" sound?

Well, I'm less than impartial, but I believe the HI-TONE DR-F's do just "that". They are only available inside HI-TONE products, though (as per our OEM agreement with Eminence).
