New amp day and a question

Post by pet0r »

Today I bought a new old Hiwatt, it's an early seventies DR103, serial # 1362. It even came with a quad of Mullard EL34's :) Only thing done to it years ago was replace a faulty v2 socket, which could benefit from some attention.

Now what kind of preamp is this, I can't find a match in the schematics.. http://www.pictureshack.us/images/39879_P1050921.JPG

Thanks for looking :)

Congrats!
You have the classic early 1970's "DR" preamp.
The standard that Dave Reeves instructed HJ to build from mid 1970-1976

Hmmm are you sure it's the standard early type preamp? It looks like something's missing next to the 220pF treble cap, and there are 2x 82k resistors (no 91k) in the phase inverter circuit. Also, there's nothing installed in the middle of the main board, where the middle screw is visible.

I'll have to look close later, there is a missing .001uf cap and 100k resistor

it is not uncommon to see two 82k resistors instead of one 91k and one 82k

Oh I found the caps I need locally, so no more need :)

BTW this preamp almost matches mine, except for a few component values: http://hiwatt.org/Schematics/DR103sn1489pre.jpg
It has a Marshall like tonestack, but with only one half of V2 used like most regular Hiwatts.

The new filter caps came in, so I replaced the old ones. I also redid the V2 wiring. Almost ready to rock :)
