Wanted: Hiwatt SE 4123
I have a vintage Hiwatt DR-103 100W head and I'm looking for a vintage Hiwatt SE 4123 cabinet with fane speakers.
- what's the typical price range?.
- I've read on page 9 of the vintage catalog (http://hiwatt.org/info/hiwattCatalogPages.pdf) the recommended for my amp is 2X SE 4123 or 2X SE 4122. Wow! But I don't need that.
- I'm hoping just 1X SE 4123 will do the trick; that's what everybody else except for stadium rock stars seem to use. If I go for a 2X12 or a 1X12, I'm just afraid of compatibility issues: maybe they can't handle it. The extra dB cut from less speakers would be welcome. I'm planning to use it along with an Aracom PRX150-DAG attenuator (-40dB max) and earplugs (-25dB), of course. I just need a good tone; it doesn't have to be loud.
- I found this one on ebay, but it's not vintage:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Hiwatt-4x12-Fan ... 416ff3a837
- I'm aware Hiwatt sells some made in China 4x12's with fanes and I wonder if they are a good substitute

you don't want the one on ebay. I can't believe that some one really bid $999 on that.
FYI, there were no vintage 2x12 or 1x12 cabs.
real HIWATT 4x12's range from $800-$1500 depending on condition.

It wasn't me.
I did find a 4123 in "player's condition" (stained grill cloth) elsewhere for 800, but they want 250 for US shipping. It probably weighs 100 lbs, but that's a lot of money for shipping. I'm trying to get them to sell it with free shipping, but it's a tough wrestle.

If the speakers are original and not reconed, they would be crazy or desperate to sell it for $800 shipping included.

Re: Wanted: Hiwatt SE 4123
I'd be very careful running a DR103 through a single SE4123.
two years in a row at VHC's I had a speaker blow, thanks to a DR103.
That is why, I sold off most of my old speaker cabs. To me, they are expensive, ticking time bombs. They aren't worth much once a speaker blows.

I see your point; the price is pretty much as low as it can get. Thanks for that info.
The store is 1800 miles away from me. Is 250 a fair/typical shipping price for continental USA?
That would make it 1050 on speakers.

$250 is a little high. But shipping to PHX is expensive. I would think that $180-$200 is fair.

FYI - Last I checked, UPS home delivery had a limit of 75 pounds.theWalrus wrote:Is 250 a fair/typical shipping price for continental USA?
A packaged HIWATT 4x12 will be in the 105 - 115 pound range (depending on packing).
FedEx will deliver something that heavy to a residence, but will charge additional for the service. If there's any way to receive your packages at a commercial address, your options increase - and resulting rates decrease. Having a loading dock helps even more.

Dave, UPS delivers home for that weight. That's my arrangement. The fun part will be getting that elephant on casters; standard, pop out ones don't seem to fit. I think I'll keep it on top of a furniture dolly while I don't have a real case.OldSchoolDave wrote:FYI - Last I checked, UPS home delivery had a limit of 75 pounds.theWalrus wrote:Is 250 a fair/typical shipping price for continental USA?

So, I got that SE4123 I show pictures of in the fane thread. I'm thinking if I use a good attenuator and keep the volume down, it shouldn't be an issue for single 4x12 cabinet use. A top notch attenuator should bring 100W down to less than 1W.Dr.HIWATT wrote:I'd be very careful running a DR103 through a single SE4123.

In case you (or anyone in the hiwatt community) ever have a SE4123 ready to let go of, let me know! Maybe I'll be interested, so I can unleash my DR103 beyond bedroom level. It'd be fun to start doing gigs at some point, but I'm technically not there yet. This gear is just to stimulate me to practice.
Thanks guys. Have a good one.
