Castor inserts - removal

Post by PhilUK »

Trying to remove the plastic castor inserts from a cab. The 2 front ones have to come out before you can remove the front baffle. The holes are drilled through the cab bottom and into the baffle and then the insert is hammered in.

Any tricks to do it? I've bought a long M10 bolt which screws into the insert fairly easily but enough to grip. Too tight and it would expand the insert making it tighter. Large washer by the head and hit it from below it the theory, lets see if it works!

The M10 bolt didn't work as well as I had hoped. Despite having to use a spanner to screw it into the insert, a couple of upward taps with an heavy adjustable spanner slid up the bolt were enough to pull the bolt out of the insert. May work on inserts that aren't in so tight.

I eventually did it by gently putting a screwdriver under the lip of the insert and gradually prising it out. Was worried about the insert breaking. Once it had come out enough to get narrow pointed nose locking grips on it, I inserted the M10 bolt again to stop the insert collapsing, attached the grips and a couple of taps brought it out.

Those hammer-in jobs are difficult, as you discovered. Glad to hear you did get them out.
