Are these original Fanes?

Post by benbang »

hello hiwatt experts!

i have a hylight 4x12 cabinet and would like a quick confirmation if the speakers inside are original fanes.
i have browsed the internet for photos of hiwatt/fane speakers but haven't seen ones that looked like these with frames shaped like this...
the plastic covers must have been removed by a pre-owner, but the stamped model number 122142 indicates they might be fanes.

also the serial number of the cabinet (#8179) indicates it was probably made in 1975 (according to mark huss's serial number page). the speakers were obviously made in in 1976 though.

Thanks for any help!!

here are some photos:

that is a 1978 cab.
Speaker enclosures have a separate serial number range from amps.

Those are HIWATT Fane speakers, but the dates do not match the cabs and the wiring is not original. Those speakers are not the originals to that cab.

it should still be a great player.

Hiwatt Fanes transitioned through several styles of frames - including the one in your picture. As Dr.Hiwatt said, they're the real deal.

The next step would be to check the codes stamped on the cones to determine if they are original.

As for the plastic magnet covers, some rattled loose over time. These may have been removed due to that or "harvested" for a separate sale.

Thanks very much so far!!

i could only find numbers on one of the cones. it seems to say either 6003 or 4003 or 2003 (maybe reconed in 2003?). underneath is a little 15 and something undecipherable.

here are some more detailed photos:

i have also just discovered an inscription at the top inside of the cabinet (see pic below), which to me looks like a name (Trevor Ab****) and the number 80. might that be the person who built it and a year of manufacture? or maybe just the insignia of a previous owner?

the more I look at these I think the date code is 24/78 not 24/76.
the cones are original and the frames are consistent with mid year 1978 frames.
I think someone rewired it along the way, but in my opinion it is an original set.

003 is the pulsonic cone code. those are great!

BTW.
