any info on these speakers?

Post by Victor »

I recently purchased an early 80's hiwatt cab that has 3 fane speakers (122142) however no purple sticker so im trying to see if these are in fact the same as the purple version but without the sticker. I understand after Dave Reeves passed on that the staff at Hiwatt kept the company going for a few years using left over parts so i'm wondering if this cabinet perhaps was made during that timeline. If anyone can offer any info would be much appreciated. thank you

those should be the same spec as earlier 122142 Fanes. The cone is correct.
How they sound in a front loaded cab??????? but they should be good speakers.

Thanks for the quick reply Dr.. They actually sounded really good when I compared it to about 4 different marshall cabinets and one Messa. they had more defination and more bottom end than any of the others but havent compared to the real purple speakers cabinet ( i have one of those at another space)
So when you say they are the correct cones and same specs does it mean that these are in fact purple fanes without the sticker on them? Reason is I'm thinking of funding another 4x12 with it, which does have the purple fanes.

thanks again

122142 is a model number Fane reserved for Hylight Electronics / Hiwatt. So, whether or not yours have the magnet cover with purple sticker, they are authentic Hiwatt Fanes.

you are making some generalizations that can be confusing.

there is no one purple back Fane.

There were several different Fane models made for HIWATT throughout the 1970's and early 1980's. All of these during the Hylight era had purple decals originally.

in 1982 when biacrown was in existense, they probably could not afford to buy the decals to label them.

These appear to be the original speakers for this cab. These are a stamped frame version of one of the most common HIWATT Fanes.

great thanks for clearing that up. im not sure if it's worth selling this one to buy a 74 cabinet since it is double the price of what I paid. Will have to think about it but this is great help. Thanks Dave
