SE4123 ex Jeff Stinco Simple Plan cab

Hi everyone !

3 weeks ago , I just bought a 4123 cab loaded with 125155's
The cab was owned by Jeff Stinco from Simple Plan before
he got famous ,I don't know much about him or this band
but I know I bought it from a friend of his or someone he used to know .
I tried to wash the black grill cloth with soap and water and gee's !!
what a mess , all the black dye came out and my kitchen counter top was
covered with a black mess ,so I learned not to do this anymore.

The cab sounds pretty good but still didn't get the tone I'm after with this cab,
and the tone I'd like to get his from the VHC Jam 3 ,

What a nice fat woody tone that is !!

According to DR Hiwatt , the cab played at the Jam was a 1978 SE4123 loaded with 125155's
and a JP30 head .

The amp at the Jam sounds darker IMO than the JP30 clip I've heard in a nice way
and I'm wondering if that is from the Head-cab combination or the amp
was tweaked tonewise to get that darker tone or maybe his Les Paul tone knobs had something to do with it ??

Anyway !..to make a long story short .......I love that tone !

Hi everyone !!


I have one speaker that doesn't move anymore
I did the 9 volt battery test and 3 of them pop out and
one is dead not moving ,no rub noise .

What is my solution .........or if its a coil ,where can I get a similar one
for a 125155 ?

I know someone near where I live that can change a coil without scrapping the cone
but I nead the right coil if that is causing the problem.

Louis, if this is the case, it's kind of a long shot. But, this would be the place if ever there was one .

I guess None of you have 2 Fanes that would go good with my 125155's ?

I meant there were probably more Fanes connected with members of this forum than any other venue. Still, it doesn't hurt to ask around.

From your first post, it sounded as if you needed on speaker or donor. Do you need two?

As to the non-responsive speaker, can you (gently) move the cone in and out or is it completely seized? Do you have a Multimeter (a cheapie is fine) to test for DC Resistance across the leads? Are the leads physically connect to the terminals (it's not uncommon for them to come loose while soldering speaker wire from the other side.

While the "9 volt test" is probably safe for larger speakers, I still cringe when I hear about it. We found out the hard (and expensive) way, not to use this on high frequency drivers. It'll cook the diaphragms. On JBL drivers with 2" throats, that's a pricey lesson to learn .

I'll never do this again !!!

A nine volt is safe for guitar speakers. A horn like Dave was describing, though, has a minimum allowable frequency to prevent damage, and DC (0 hz) is certainly far lower!

A really old crackly paper speaker might not like the excursion, but if so, it's probably not long for this world anyway...

Thank's Mark .......I feel a little bit better but still won't do it again.


I've check the speaker and no coil rub ,everything seems fine but no sound.

I think it's dead !!.......

Do you have a meter or continuity tester? If so, you can test the speaker by itself and see if the coil is open. Do both flying leads connecting to the cone seem intact?

Flying leads seems to be fine ,I'll try to get a tester and report back
and might also take pictures !

I finally took a few pictures ,the leads seems to be tight ,would it help
if I would melt the existing solder mud on the taps and solder the flying leads again and make
a test to see if sound comes ? This is the only speaker in the cab without a Fane purple cover,
got it like that.

If you have a speaker cable with aligator clips at one end (and everyone should ), try gently clipping those directly to the braided leads.

Otherwise, clean up those terminals, try resoldering the leads and testing again.

I resoldered and clean a bit ,plugged a jack into output 2 of my amp,
put tip and ring on tabs and still nothing ,tried it on another
speaker and works fine .

I guess I'll have to take it for a coil change ?
