Fane Crescendo

Post by TheAviator »

Hi

I just purchased two 100 watt, 8 Ohm, Fane Crescendo's in a WEM cabinet. I intend to use them on my 1973 DR103. A friend of mine mentioned they may not be able to take the power as the DR103 can peak at 250 watts. Is he correct?

Now I'm confused about the ratings, are the Fanes and Hiwatt amps rated in RMS or peak?

If he is correct can I pull two output valves to bring the amp down to 50 watts? If so which two, do I remove? I'm guessing the outer two.

yes, you should remove the outer most tubes and cut the output impedance in half.

Thanks for the reply

So if I pull the outer two and the speaker cab is 16 Ohms ,then I set the amp to 8 Ohms.

If I dont pull the outer two tubes and leave it at 100 watts, do you think that the speaker and amp would be OK with just the two 100 watt Crescendo's. Is a Hiwatt thats rated at 100 watts peak power or RMS?

It'll be OK until it isn't... :? All depends on how hard you drive the amp and how healthy the vintage Crescendos are. They're your speakers - it's your risk.

a healthy 1970's DR103 will put out around 160 watts.
You would be best to pretend the crescendos are 40-50 watt drivers.

Thanks for your comments, looks like I will be pulling out a couple of EL34's.

The Crescendo's sound very nice, more detail and not so thin and bright as my Celestion GT12's. They give a more balanced sound. :D
