Strange DR103 from the 70s (probably Harry Joyce)

Post by elusalem »

Hi,
in the late 80s I've bought this Hiwatt to use it with a hammond organ and a leslie-like speaker system.
Then it rested for almost two decades in a friend's garage.
Last week i've got it back and started a little research on it's history - and it's value (I don't really need it anymore so I'm probably selling it).

It has some strange oddities - as you can see on the pix below:
- no white piping below the logo plate
the structure of the tolex looks exactly like the rest of the caseing - so it doesn't seem to be replaced.
Seems to me like the piping wasn't applied when it was build in the first place. Although there's a groove in the wood where it should be pressend into.

- strange wavy / round knobs
I've looked at a lot of pix on the web but never found similar ones. They look like bakelite and they look quite professional.
i can't imagine why anyone would replace the standard chicken head knobs with these - so i'd consider them to be original.

- no serial plate
the plate is missing - instead some kind of a plumbers badge has been put there.

- date of make
the capacitors and pots are stamped with 75/76 Dates.
so the original date of make was probably late seventies (I don't know how long those parts rested in the shelfes before they were used)
the tubes have mid-80s Dates. so the must have been maintenanced in that period.

Whart do you think?
Is this a very special treasue or just a piece of trash that has been poorly fixer at time when it was worthless and considered to be lame?

Any thoughts / comments appreciated!
Best regards from Hamburg
Ernst

After doing a bit more research I'm pretty sure that this is a Herry Joyce version.

This one I've found at another board is HJ

Mine doesn't say HJ on the frame but has the exact same blue markings.

Unfortunately the pictures in this section aren't availible anymore...

Somewhere in between. The amp has seen a lot of service - which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Mains lamp, fuse posts and knobs are not original (even if they are old). I don't know what to make about the lack of horizontal piping :? .

With the serial plate missing, it's difficult to say if the amp started its life as a DR103 or if it was a converted PA or Slave head. It appears that most of the important bits are there - but I'm not the resident expert on transformer codes, etc..

So, if it's performing properly, it's worth what a "player grade" Hiwatt fetches these days.

...Hey! I played that song when it was new...

it has been recovered in marshall levant tolex.
As Dave said, the knobs, fuse holders etc. have been replaced.
it isn't trash by any means, but it isn't a collectors piece either.

Based on the pics, it is approx. a mid 1976 vintage.

In the USA it would be worth around $1000 give or take. In europe??

Thanks for your replies, guys.

I'm still thinking of what to do with it...
Strip the case and put on clear cote and let it collect dust for the next ten years probably.
