Hi,
I bought this a couple years ago, absolutely love the tone.
My favorite speaker has always been the G12H-30 55hz Celestion but this is an equally great sounding speaker.
Have been trying to track down more & cannot.
Even worse, this one needs to be reconed.
Previous owner(s) put some type of adhesive on the underside of the surround (there are cracks).
When examining speaker recently, i noticed it had some type of fungus growing in these spots.
I wiped it gently with a damp paper cloth, but i'm worried it will be back.
Also, my multimeter gives me a reading of 9.2 ohms...What does that make it's official impedance rating? Sort of Blown?
Do any of the Fane recreations (Reeves, Hi-Tone, etc) model after the stamped frame 122142?
Does anyone know if there is a speaker reconing service out there that matches old cone to new?
I have a feeling i'm boned on this one.
Fane badly needs the equivalent of a Jim Seavall, i think.

Re: 122142 questions
I am the closest thing to the Fane version of Jim Seaval.
I have been working with Eminence engineers for the last four years replicating Fane Speakers.
Your speaker is sort of an oddball in that the cone is not the commonly used pulsonic, but a kurt mueller.
This makes it easier to recone. The quad of these that I used to have had DCR in the 9 range as well. DCR 0f 9-12 is common for 1970's Fanes.
The reeves attempt is not like any HIWATT Fane that I or any others that know HIWATT Fanes. Having said that, the VP isn't bad with CP style amps as they are so bright, the muddy VP tames that considerably.
The HI-TONE DR-F is not a replica of a 1221142, but sonically it is extremely similar. Identical bass and mid range but it has slightly more presence.

Re: 122142 questions
Thanks Dr.,
The resistance information explains why the 122231 i've got measures @ 10ohms - that one has a 15ohm sticker.
When i wired the two together (parallel) i treated them as an 8ohm pair.
Sound-wise i believe the 122231 sounded darker than the 122142, and one had a different sensitivity than the other.
With the 122142 alone I like the tight controlled bass, the overall focused sound & bite, at least at the volume i had it.
So the DR-F looks like the way for me to go, really like the sounds i'm hearing on the Hi-Tone Homepage.
Also, searching the 'net, came up with a business, Around the Sound in the Seattle area - any good word on fane recones with them,
or anyone else in the u.s.?
Thanks again.

If it sounds good, why do you want to recone it ?thyson wrote:

Seems a shame to invoke the "nuclear option" on a working vintage speaker. Clean up the surround repair and investigate ways to stabilize it.

Re: 122142 questions
Yes, reconing would be a last resort certainly...but since both fanes i mentioned have cracks in the surrounds i was thinking to the future.
Have to decide if i'm an Elmer's glue or rubber cement kind of guy - i was thinking to go to the store & find some light silk piece of clothing to use as patching material.
Kind of class up the joint - silk...meet fungus

FWIW, I prefer rubber cement for surround repairs.thyson wrote:
