early 1980's SE4123 for sale

Post by Dr.HI-TONE »

I am posting this for a friend of mine, who is on tour, so I don't have lots of details.
I can get more info, but it will take a while as the cab is in MPLS/St.Paul and he is on the road.

It is a front loaded SE4123 with Fane speakers, not sure what model, I would guess them to be 125155, but I haven't see the stamp.
the grill cloth is salt and pepper, it looks good.

it is pictured here with some HI-TONEs.

I don't think so. I haven't seen the serial tag.
it originally had a black grillcloth, but the owner wanted it to match his HI-TONE cab, until he got his 2nd HI-TONE cab.
I am sure it sounds good, but how good, I don't know.
Some guys love the front loaded cabs.

I've never had the opportunity to play through a front loaded cab. I wonder what the difference in tone is?

I have both styles of Hylight cabs. My front-loader has 122142's in it, which I believe to be original to the cab (1980 dates).

Haven't A/B'd them in awhle. As I recall, the front loaded cab seemed a bit punchier (if that's possible ;) ). "MDF-snobs" may want to steer clear of the front loaders, but I see no reason not to consider one.

More important to know what model of speakers are inside and the condition of their cones.

I wish I had more specifics with this cab. It isn't the most collectible, but my friend says it sounds very good. and we priced it fairly.
I can certainly vouch for the seller. He is a good guy.

getting it shipped quickly would be the only issue. They are playing in Austin TX the next two weekends.

Thanks for the replies gentlemen. I'm gonna keep my ear to the ground for an early cab. I'd love to find an old metal badge cab, empty, and fill it with newer speakers.

Is that old silver grill cloth available anywhere? Love that look.

I wish it was available. There isn't anything even close. I have been looking for 6-7 years.

The old silver grill cloth looks just like the old Sound City cloth. There has to be some company that may be able to re-create it. Would love to get a sample of it and see if it could be cloned somehow.

I have a 1968/1969 HIWATT 4x12 with that cloth. But I digress, a cab to match your head would have the traditional salt and pepper with a metal badge.

I see, my 69' would have the traditional cloth with the metal badge? Is that the same cloth used for the early 70's cabs as well? Just curious. I'm not totally attached to having a 69' cab, would be nice though to match 'em up.
