Unknown wattage 125669 speaker

Post by Prehistoricman »

I got this FANE speaker for cheap on eBay but didn't get much info about its specs or model.
It's 8 ohms (DC 6 ohms) and 12 inches with a rather large cloth dust cap.
The numbers appear to read:
32885
125669

That last number has appeared on the forum before: viewtopic.php?f=11&t=1901
But that one has a different sticker and top number. I don't know the significance of the numbers so maybe this is expected.

I can't see any text on the back of the cone.

I'm mainly interested in knowing what power output I should expect from this and what vintage it is.
Thanks

Well, Fane Date Codes changed a lot, but I'm pretty confident "85" is the production year. As to the label differences from the other post, there's a year between the two and that wouldn't surprise me.

I had thought the "125" models were rated slightly higher for power handling (maybe 75 WRMS vs 50WRMS?). That said, the magnet doesn't look as robust as some of the stronger models. Either way, given the age, I personally wouldn't run more than about 30 WRMS into it.

Let us know how it sounds.

Thanks for the info Dave.
So they changed from the small label to the bigger one around '84? Or is it not that clear-cut?

I haven't gone silly with the volume yet but I have noticed a few differences between it and my 2x10 Eminence Ramrod & Ragin Cajun cab. It's very directional! But produces a bit more high end so it sounds okay in the room without needing it pointing at me. Bass is weaker. Overall sounds less modern.

They had different sized labels.
Fane was unlike Celestion in that they made dozens of different models if not hundreds.
it is anyone's guess who that speaker was made for, or what the specs were.
