stereo HIWATTs

Post by mikhailwatt »

Hey guys,

I'm looking to double the mayhem and go with a stereo HIWATT rig...

Never really tried this before - would it be best to go with matched heads (2 x DR103) or a DR103 + DR504 mix?

Opinions? :?

Why not 2 x DR201  ?

Are you going to do one clean, one wet or are you looking for a fairly symmetrical sound? If the latter, it might be helpful to have the same heads on each side. But, not absolutely necessary. You should be able to dial in a DR103 and a DR504 to a pretty good match.

But......aren't you near a seismic fault  ?

They'd be set up in a symmetrical "semi-wet" stereo rig... occasional analog stereo chorus, 'vibe, and delay ahead of the amps.

Any really heavy time-based f/x would probably still go post-amp - I'll have to see how much "engulfication" is attainable with "only" the dual half-stacks and stompboxes.

I spent a good half hour at GC, testing the delay for transparency. It doesn't mess with the basic guitar-amp tone much at all... unlike the Line6 DL4 which sucks out all the low end punch.

The delays are nice - I really like the analog setting with a little bit of coloration/warble. The modulation f/x are quite good, although I might add an analog chorus later.

You have to do a little tap dancing with them to change presets on the fly, but I pretty much leave the delay on all the time, and kick in the occasional chorus or phase shifter.

Great you noticed this too? I used to own 2 DL4's but them promptly sold them once I figured out what was sucking all my low end away. :|

Keeley does a mod for the DL4, don't know if it fixes the low end disappearing act, though.

The wait time might be really long - I read that their shop burned down a few weeks ago. :(
