Hey guys, I've come upon a Hiwatt cab for sale in Montreal that the seller says is an '81. Here are photos, can you guys verify?
What wattage fanes would be in a cab of this era? Are they less desireable than 70's cabs? How does the sound compare? What's the going rate for a cab like this? Sorry for all the questions, thanks.

Re: '81 Hiwatt Cab
The s/n tag on that one is not Hylight, or even Biacrown. Definitely not '81, definitely not worth Hylight $$$$, IMO. Looks like a slant cab by one of the later "HIWATT in name only" companies. I don't know anything about the speakers, other than they are a different model than those used in the Hylight cabs.
It could sound ok, only you can decide that for yourself. It's just not a classic, true HIWATT.

Cool, thanks. I thought the serial badge looked odd...
I won't be able to try it before buying it, so I'm gonna pass. Thanks for the heads up!

Re: '81 Hiwatt Cab
As I recall, the slant cabs didn't come into play until either the Audio Brothers or Sterling Imports era (that cab is probably the latter). Is the model number an LA-412 (or something similar)?
The speakers do appear to be Fanes, but there's no way to know how they compare to the vintage Hiwatt Fanes without trying. My guess is that they're 75 watters.
If it's going cheap, it'd probably be a decent acquisition. If the seller is trying to get vintage (Hylight) Hiwatt prices for it, nevermind.
