some dusty things here
Hi there,
I'm new here on this forum.
I come from the Netherlands and playing guitar for 30 years now
Yesterday someone offered me to take a look at some old guitar amps.
The guy spoke about sound city and Hiwatt amps and two Hiwatt cab's.
Today I took a quick visit to an old barn and discovered some amps and cabs witch are not touched for about 8 years or more.
Under a layer of dust, and old spiders I discoverd the following:
A Hiwatt DR103 100W top (I guess 1969-1971 area) without tubes, black front plate etc in horrible condition.
A Sound city MK3 100W top L.100W (probably same area) serial M.3727 with tubes etc (don't know if it's working)
Two identical Hiwatt cabinets (also same area) with unknown speakers (brown/beige cloth and grey tolex)
I was not able to check the equipment, but made some pictures.
I think both amps are not working and the hiwatt must be restored completely.
Don't know if the owner knows something about the value of these things (current owner is not a guitar player)
What could be a reasonable maximum price for this set?

Re: some dusty things here
the HIWATT DR103 looks very rough. The transformers are very rusty and the serial tag is gone. Can you remove the amp from the head cab and take pics of the internal wiring? There is nothing in the pics that would indicate a date of manufacture.
Take pics of the serial tags on the speaker cabs too. Then remove the back panel from the Speaker Enclosures and take pics of the speakers......especially the stickers on the speaker frames that will have the specs printed on them.
The Sound City head is worth maybe $1000 if it is in mint condition.....It is not HIWATT related.
With internal pics and serial numbers we can give you a good estimate of the value.

Re: some dusty things here
Thanks doc.
Let's hope the owner gives me a good price.
I Already have some nice amps (Vox AC30 and Mesa studio 22) so these amps are like an investment / restoration objects.
These Hiwatt pages are very useful and If i'll buy it, I will take some clear pictures of everything.
Do they (Vintage hiwatt convention) send parts to the Netherlands?
I will keep you posted.

yes, VHR will ship to Europe.
However we only use U.S.Postal service for international parcels.
Email VHR first and get a quote. The online store uses a UPS shipping calculator and it is quite a bit more expensive than the Postal Service.
Good Luck, with the HIWATTs!

I also like what appears to be a Stihl chainsaw in one of the pictures. I have four of them and can't wait to show my collection to Old School Dave.

Re: some dusty things here
I'll play in a Jackl coverband .
During the song "Lumberjack" we cut the Hiwatt 4x12 into four separate 12" speakers for surround sound

Oh those more aggressive chains without the reduced kickback are so much more...effective. Stihl rules. No need to run, Dave!
