Re: labor day hunting trip
I left my house at 3:20am. Getting out early before the mighty HIWATT wakes. I must have triggered a security flag, as I was pulled aside in Indy and given a full body X-Ray scan and my personal items (mp3 player, phone wallet, shoes and keys), were gone through. I really look like a terrorist! Atleast I was in a good mood and it was somewhat funny.
I landed in Phoenix at 6:15 mountain time, then San Diego at 8:45 pacific time.
Did I mention the abundance of beautiful girls in San Diego? oops, sorry back to the HIWATT hunt.
The seller picked my up at the airport and we headed back to his place to see the beast!
Well, I finally got my hands on a real DR405!
I got to open her up and thoroughly check her out. Plus I got to fire it up and play through it.
It fit very snuggly in the custom Anvil ata case with the "speedster" option (wheels on one end opposite a telescopic handle).
Geez, was it heavy!
119 lbs.! ***this is very important as the airlines will not accept ANY checked luggage over 100 lbs.
Panic! I am on the verge of missing my flight. My new prize is not admitted on the plane, and must be shipped home.
Fortunately the seller (very cool guy) was still near the airport and came back to pickup the amp and take it to UPS for me.
I hurried through security and made it to my gate. I landed in Chicago at 5:40 central time and then Indy at 9:10 eastern time. What a long day!
I will post nice pics of the 400 once it arrives. It did have all 6 GEC KT88's and looked completely original with the exception of 3 resistors!

Re: labor day hunting trip
I know how long you've been stalking the rare and elusive DR405. Congrats on a successful hunt! Can't think of a more appropriate place for one of those magnificent trophy beasts than Hiwatt Valley!
Now, tell us more about those girls in San Diego .

Re: labor day hunting trip
I was very impressed with the number of beautiful girls I saw in my 3 hours spent in San Diego! IF I ever move out of HIWATT Valley, San Diego is on my short list!
But my HIWATT collection might trigger the BIG earthquake???????????

Re: labor day hunting trip
I have been looking for one for a few years.
There weren't many made and most of them have seen a lot of action.

I keep an eye out for vintage monster amps.
Got a chuckle out of this one @ $5,159:

Actually, the heavy-duty end handles are not a bad idea!

The end handles are great! I am surprised that the DR201's did not have them.mhuss wrote:Actually, the heavy-duty end handles are not a bad idea!

I am considering them on my upcoming batch of head cabs.
Re: labor day hunting trip
I think the 50 and 100 are manageable one-handed, but the 200 (and I'm sure the 400) can benefit from two arms.

It's all a matter of perspective. At my "experience" (avoiding the word "age"):mhuss wrote:I think the 50 and 100 are manageable one-handed, but the 200 (and I'm sure the 400) can benefit from two arms.
the 50 is manageable
the 100 could use two handles
the 200 is better carried by a trustworthy roadie
and the 400 probably needs a forklift !
