cast frame Whizzer cones in an SE4122

I decided to take a chance on an SE4122 that had a set of early 1970s cast frame Whizzer cone drivers. at low volumes they sound nice, but with more volume they become "wobbly" like the amp has a tremolo. Then the tremolo becomes a buzzy, rattling distortion with more volume.

It looks like these will go under the knife and get new dustcaps!

This is one way to see if that internet tale really works.... :?

Does the (main) cone on those feel as rigid as one from a 122231 or 122142? Does it have the same ribbing?

I look forward to reading your observations after the whizzer-ectomy.

Well, I DO have a quad of vintage Fanes with the Star of David stamped on the frames... :? :wink:
