I need to re-wire a cab
What wires do I need? Where do I find them?
I picked up a '73 SE4122 cab a couple months ago. A previous owner did a messy wiring job. I can't even discern if it's wired correctly. The speakers are in good shape and the cab sounds pleasant at low volume, but I want to re-wire before I crank it. My other Hiwatt cabs sounds great, so I'm eager to compare.

I'll say ! Get that snarled junk out of there and start over.Zells wrote:A previous owner did a messy wiring job.
Any good 18 gauge, insulated, braided wire will do (and will be as good, if not better than original equipment). I thought Mark Huss had a wiring graphic on his Hiwatt site, but can't seem to find it now. If I stumble across it, I'll return and post.
Nice score on the cab!

EDIT: Here's the graphic. Still can't find the original link...

For the record, the posted graphic reflects the "factory original" wiring, with two conductors inside a sheath. The black conductor that dances around the cab can be replaced by a straight run down to the speaker below.

Well....., if you're gonna hide it in an obscure path like that, how can you expect us to find it ?mhuss wrote: http://www.mhuss.com/Hiwatt/Layouts/CabWiring.jpg

I had to look it up myself, but I didn't have to look too far.

Re: I need to re-wire a cab
I used some blue & black 16 ga. stranded hookup wire I got at HD. The originals used 18 ga. (AFAIK)... but supposedly 16 ga. gives the "best tone."GigawattCustom121 wrote:or the fast way... just run down to your local Home Depot

I don't know where Doc gets his vinyl sleeving... I used some black heat shrink to approximate the OEM condition.

It's a secret!
Mouser 100' rolls
Mike, did you see the job I did with the Weber FC12s in the Reeves cab? Maybe that was Buster overseeing my work?

Nope, missed it. But I'm envisioning ol' Buster looking over your shoulder, bourbon in hand, commenting on how it's SUPPOSED to be done...Dr.HIWATT wrote:did you see the job I did with the Weber FC12s in the Reeves cab? Maybe that was Buster overseeing my work?

Re: I need to re-wire a cab
Thank you for the responses. I will try Home Depot in the next couple days as I am hoping to punch some air with these cast back Fanes this weekend.
I am already familiar with the Huss schematic, but I'm glad to see it posted again as it may help others who find this thread.

Re: I need to re-wire a cab
Re-wiring was completed on 11/13. The cab now sounds like my other '73 SE4122. Both of 'em have a bigger sound compared to '76 cab with smaller magnets. I couldn't find black and blue 16 or 18 gage insulated wire, so I used transparent 16 gage speaker wire.
