My Latest Hiwatt: a SA112 from 79

Post by clusterstudios »

Just got it today... a 1979 two holler. Looks like it had a little mod done in V1. Other than that she is a beauty. 520VDC on the plates (tubes in @120VAC wall). Fane was replaced with a Vintage 30 which surprisingly sounds great... more towards a Marshall sound without the compression. I understand that these are rare to find. Any comments or observations??

Nice score! Other than the goop at the V1 end of the board, it's pretty clean. Looks like someone may have retouched a bunch of the solder joints. Troubleshooting step, perhaps?

Don't know if the combos are particularly rare. I've got a SA112 from 1980. It's a PCB model, with all filter caps under the chassis. Also have an SA212 inspected in August of '79 (like your "new" amp). Both crank out a lot of Hiwatt goodness!

...Hey! I played that song when it was new...

Does that little curly yellow wire near V2 on the board mean a Canadian mod??

Nice score. That's the next Hiwatt I want to get (a 50 watt 1x12 combo). 8)

That does look like a CA mod (or more to the point, a "modded CA mod."). Easily undone if you don't like it.

Thanks Mark. It sounds so good right now, I don't think I want to mess with it. Who (no pun intended) needs a stack when this little baby can roar like a lion. :D

Thanks guys. That makes it 5 Hiwatts now. An all original 1975 Custom 50 watt Head with 4x12 cab , a DR103 Custom 100 from 79, two JP100s I built myself last year and now this one. I'm still waiting to find a 200 watter w/ KT88s like this one here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3JVGjonK ... re=related. What a sweet sound.... If anyone out sees one, let me know :)
