HIWATT DR-201 needs yer help!

Post by wallofsound »

Hi there, I've got a 1975 HIWATT dr-201 that right now isn't putting out any sound? I also get some hum from amp itself(not thru speakers).. I was wondering is this normal for these heavy transformers? Cuz dr-103's aren't same.

But maybe here's a question you HIWATT enthusiasts can help me with. I know many people say you are supposed to use two cabs for these 4 output amps. If you use one, then you need to have a dead plug(1/4" stereo adapter plug?) in the coupled one: say 1 and 3, or 2 and 4. Person I bought it from claimed it was either modded or this didn't need that. What happens if you don't do it? I have looked at some other 201 chassis pics and noticed it still does similar. Advice?

If you know a good tech for HIWATT amps in LA area(particularly westside area) lemme know.

Hmm, it's hard to tell from those pictures. Did you try plugging the cab into the 4th (rightmost, closest to the impedance selector) jack? If that doesn't work, try plugging a plug (or an unused cable will do) into 1 or 2 (speaker still in 4) and see if that works.

FYI, you can still get right angle 1/4" plugs at Radio Shack:

Stick one in the back (to satisfy the series wiring) and you'll never notice it again. The two pack came in handy. I used one in my DR201 and the other in my "M" Bluesbreaker reissue, to disconnect the Tremelo circuit.

Right now this the only other pic of the power section I have, I really hope to get her up and running soon, although playing two dr-103s in stereo is nice as well. It was modded, but the ebay seller told it was restored back to original standards.. so I'm hoping he's right.
