Sound City Fanes vs Hiwatt Fanes

Post by foster »

Hi,

I've recently bought a Sound City cab from around '70 in really great conditions to use with my '74 DR103.

It's a rear vented cab with two front ports and it has the Fanes 112190 front mounted, rated at 15 ohms, and it sounds great,

really different than my other cabs with Celestions, let's say more "meaty".

Since I've never tried an Hiwatt cab with 122231 or with 122142, and founded one used with 122142,

how will the Hiwatt cab sounds compared to the Sound City?

Thx

I've not seen a Sound City cab that is BOTH rear vented AND front ported. Do the ports appear to be original?

The 122190 Sound City Fanes used 14,000 gauss magnets, which would make them closer to a 122231 Hiwatt Fane than a 122142. They originally had 102 006 cones and were rated at 40 watts.

What are the dates on your Fanes? I have a quad of 122190's from '71/72. They have cast frames and aluminum dust covers with felt "deadeners" glued on the centers. The ones that didn't have scratchy voice coils sound good. Similar in character to the 122231, but the aluminum domes brighten the up a bit.

Can you post pics and codes?

I'm sorry but I'm not able to post pics here...maybe 'cause I'm using a Mac?

Anyway Yes. the ports appear to be original, and the gasket and cone codes are as follows:

Top left speaker: Gasket: 35/72. Cone: 1021 11.

Top right speaker: Gasket: 36/72. Cone: 1021 11.

Bottom left speaker: Gasket: 35/72. Cone: 1021 11.

Bottom right speaker: Gasket: 34/72. Cone: 1021 11

We don't discriminate here ;) . Not sure why it's not letting you post. Maybe we can take that conversation off-line tomorrow (Friday) and figure it out.

I stand corrected! Just looked at the pics of my 122190 dated 29/72 and it also has a 1021 11 cone. My '71 issues have the 102 006 cones.

Sounds like you've got an original quad there - very nice. Do they look like this?:

Hi Dave,

the front side looks exactly the same, but rear the magnet seems not so big..and thy don't have any label over the magnet.. only a label on the cast frame of each one

If you PM an email address I can send you the pics so maybe YOU can post them..

Thx

PM Sent.

Not sure how large the magnet on that one is (besides the 14,000 gauss rating). What you're seeing is a plastic magnet cover, painted to match the frame. Your covers may be missing?
