1978 Hiwatt cab with Fanes

Post by louis »

Hi everyone !

Not long after ( jrsdws ) a forum member here got his Hiwatt head and cab
from a seller who had two heads and cabs up for sale ,I needed another
cab and Jrsdws was very nice and invited me to contact the seller and I made a deal for the
cab on the left with a missing speaker. Those pictures are from Jrsdws.

Due to the fact that there was a speaker that was not working and needed to get reconed,
the price was $500 ,fair price I think ? But !!!

I'm from Canada and the cab was in the US so I got a quote from Fedex for a pick-up
and the price was $155.... this plus $500, plus one recone is still a good deal for a cosmeticly Mint 1978 cab .

But!!.................

The cab went to a well knowned speaker guy who has been reconing Fanes from the early 70's and also
other brands of speakers, a real professionnal. To make a long story short ,he reconed the seaker with a vintage cone
that he had on his shelf , ( good news)

The bad news was that another speaker was not working because of coil damage so he had enough skills to change the coil without reconing
that Fane (another good news)

Bad news was that instead of $155 ,Fedex sent me an invoice of $400 ........so $400 plus $500 plus $350 for speaker repair ,thats more than expected.

So The cab is stored somewhere and I never had the chance to hear it so I hope that those '' 425155 '' Fanes sound good !

The most exiting part of this journey was to give this cab a second chance
and open a box when it arrived to see a 1978 cab in new condition ,WoW!! it was weird !!.....not a scuff!!

Enough said !......Take care you all!!.............Louis

Did FedEx explain why their invoice was so much more than their estimate  ?

125155's are good speakers. I have them in my "ugly duckling" cab (the polar opposite of your "factory fresh" model). I'm sure you'll be pleased.

Well you know how it goes when you have a quote by someone you dont
even know on the phone ,instead of having a written agrement !!
Next time ,I will ask them to email me the details so I'll have a proof.
I did'nt even try cause I know that I will hit a wall!!

And thank's Dave for your input on those speakers ,the only experience I have with Fane cabinets
is with a 4x12 loaded with the ''122142 model that sounded very good.

Oops  , my recollection was incorrect (I'll blame it on the blizzard we're having). My "ugly duckling" cab is loaded with 125114's, not 125155's. But, I swear I've heard '155's before and they've sounded good. It seems as if Hiwatt changed the model numbers awhile after going to front-loaded cabs.

Dr.Hiwatt, do you know which is of those "new" model numbers had the 14,000 gauss magnets and which the 17,000 gauss?

Nice cab Louis!

I think I have a pair of SE4123s with 125155s. They are good sounding speakers. I don't know a magnet weight of strength.

Can I ask who the person/company was that did the recones? I have 2 stamped frame Fanes that need a re-cone and want them done as close as possible to the originals-

Thanks-
