Four JJ 6V6 tubes. Part of the design rationale for this was the fact I really like "four bangers," they seem to me to have more complexity and depth then two-by output sections. As mentioned, you can also use a pair of almost any octal tubes that have the standard EL34 footprint.

Two clips are now posted at: http://www.vintagehiwattrestorations.co ... clips.html

Note that these were intentionally left raw and unedited - with the guitar plugged straight into the amp - so there's no studio trickery of any kind.

Sounds very good! You can't expect to nail the tone spot on with an open-back 1x12 with a Fane and 6V6s in place of EL34s, but I understand that's not what this amp sets out to do. Regardless of that, I can hear just the right level of gain and rawness. I'm sure it'll really shine with a closed-back 4x12!

I hope to have one to perform with live, on top of my HI-TONE 2x12.

When we ran the prototype through a 4x12, we were pleased. It was very interesting to note how much the different power tube options changed the sound.

These clips were recorded using a little Tascam DR-07 with its built-in mikes, so that certainly contributes to the sound character to some extent (compared to the full rig and normal mikes I have used in the past).

NICE !!!!

Is there a big difference or none at all between the Sozo caps
and some Mustard caps in a Hi-Tone amp or it sounds pretty much the same?

That is a good question. The HI-TONE prebuilt DR307 will have predominately NOS mustards. I suppose if your ears are influenced by MOJO, there may be a larger effect than those ears that don't believe in MOJO.

I've done some Mustard/SOZO swapping in the Hiwatt-converted SC amp. There isn't much difference between SOZO and NOS Mustards. The difference is noticeable between well used Mustards and new SOZO. The caps 'burn-in' over time, for lack of a better term, making the tone subtly warmer and more loose.

The JP amp guts look great, DR.H

I notice the JP has a 22uF on the preamp board. In my own clone I have a much smaller cap, something like 4.7uF, and I thought the originals also used a small value cap here. I realize this may not have been intended as a pure "clone" amp, but I'm still curious as to why this value?

I also wonder which value the inside preamp cap is - 16+16, 16+32 or 32+32?

this prototype pictured used a 22uf when the pic was taken as that was the closest I had available at the time. The amp ships with a 10uf.
16+32 uf is the can used.

I guess I shouldn't have posted the pic.

Thanks Zells!

It sounds better than it looks!

Louis,
I think the MOJO bug has bitten us all atleast once. Some (like me) more than others.

I have two more like the one pictured to finish, then I will build one with all NOS mustards to compare with.

I just need to clone myself twice! My problem is time and energy.

We need a "smilie" for a panting dog.
