I totally get what you're saying. At first I liked the extra thickness and gain of the later HJ, but now I prefer the early HJ too. My clone sounds really close to that one and there's no need for further mods now. There is just a bit more pre amp distortion available compared to the average DR; the real gain comes in once you get the power amp/PI working.
