Brutal- ugh. I guess I should read up on Fane-style alternatives. Your Hi-Tones are known to be killers, but I wish I knew the thrill of playing through the real deal... there's lots of neutral-voiced, high powered options these days I guess.

yeah, the DR-F is outstanding.
I have some other models that will be coming out sometime soon. I have just about all the good old Fanes covered.
if you ever find yourself in Indiana, you should come by.
the HI-TONE HQ is tone candy store.

Looked like you had things pretty well under control, but here I am ;) .

@slrstcs - you've received the best information from this country's, if not the world's, preeminent Hiwatt expert. Question not what tells you Yoda  .

When new, a quad of Hiwatt Fanes (122142 or 122231) could stand up to a dimed DR103. But, time takes its toll on spiders, surrounds and voice coils. A vintage cab can still sound fantastic - it just has to be (man)handled with care.

At least one or two of those toasted Fanes were mine. Didn't realize it until getting back home. Heck, even one of my Eminence Deltas (rated at
400 watts rms and teamed with 3 others in a front loaded cab) was fried after being hammered by my DR201 during the Convention.

Thanks Dave!
You have a way with words that I may never have. I am very blunt and to the point.

There is a reason that there are more old HIWATT amps out there than HIWATT speaker cabs.

This all makes sense to me. I hate to pass up on the opportunity to land a cab that seems to be in nice shape, but I would've felt like a monster idiot to blow out the speakers.

I actually live in Ohio- just about 20 minutes outside of Dayton. Are you in Southern Indiana somewhere? That's amazing! I would totally take you up on an offer to check out the shop.

Great- I'd love to head out on the 30th- thanks for the invite! Should I bring anything? I'll shoot you a PM! Awesome

Also, as far as vintage Hiwatt cabs are concerned, is there anything floating around that can handle the heft of a 103? Are the black, front-ported later cabs at all worth looking into?

I don't like the front loaded cabs as well, but they may be able to handle one better than an older rear loaded cab.
Based on your description of how you like to play, you are asking for vintage speakers to die.

Sorry I don't have the answer you really want to hear.

No worries, it's good to get this stuff straight instead of wasting time chasing something that doesn't exist!
There's so many different permutations of Fane/Hiwatt cabs, many more than I've investigated, so I was hoping something would be a good fit.

Happy to help!

@slrstcs - small world. I lived in the Cincinnati area for a couple of years, a couple of years ago. Not a bad drive over to HI-TONE Village from there.

Totally a small world- what a trip!

Do you guys know much about Fane 122785 speakers? I have seen some pop up in an old Carlsbro cab, and some WEM PA towers... there's a ton of Fane models out there, and I guess I'm barely beginning to scratch the surface outside of the standard few Hylight-era Hiwatt offerings. Are these higher powered speakers? How do they sound?

In fact- here go- this is billed as a 4123, but the speakers are odd. Plus, it's rear-loaded with black grill?

I have nearly posted a "buyer beware" post regarding that cab as well as a totally mucked over 1970 DR103 that has been on ebay for the last month or so. Oh crap some poor bastard bought the basketcase DR103. It wasn't worth a grand..That is too bad. I feel for someone.

The speakers in that cab are not HIWATT models hence they are not original to that cab. It may be worth a couple hundred bucks. but thats about all. Front loaded cabs started in mid 1978.

Agreed (but think you meant to say FRONT loaded cabs started in mid '78?). That style of handle would, indeed, date to around '78 (my ugly duckling cab and your Gin Blossoms one), right?

@slrstcs - we have chased that tail off and on for years. Some non-Hiwatt Fanes can sound pretty good in that application, but not all are created equal. If you want to save yourself a boatload of time (and money), take a drive over to Columbus and try a DR-F loaded cab.
