The mil-spec way to do it from under the board is to make sure the wire comes out the top of the turret and bends over, so it can be physically inspected from the top of the board. The HJ ones I've worked on have been this way. Despite best intentions, this is not always obvious once the component has been laid on top and soldered in.

The HJ signature, is NOT RARE.

His shop did wire more than any other subcontractor. They are the most common of all the real HIWATTs....
I crack up every time I see ebay sellers promoting their amps like that!

My 73 Dr112 has wires under board and no ink spots. Maybe Harry started the job and Dave finished it on the day this was built.

I am pretty sure that Dave Reeves removed himself from the routine building by 1972 or 1973. He did more Research and Development and custom "one-offs" for artists. HJ electronics or another subcontractor most likely built your PA head.

What is the latest known HJ wired amps? I ask as I just picked up a 1980 Hylight (inspection date 31-1-80) DR103 that has blue marker on all the solder joints and wires coming from under the board. It's kind of an odd ball amp as it has all the cap cans inside the chassis, retains the heat shield, and only has 4 noval sockets/holes. This was pretty much near the end of Hylight's existence, so I am a little curious.

Harry continued to wire for HIWATT till the end of Biacrown, the end of 1984.

When did Hiwatt start using PCBs? Was that purely in the Biacrown era? Also, did Reeves and crew start putting marker on their solder joints at some point?

DR started using PC Boards in late 1980. I don't know exactly when Hylight builders began using felt tipped pens or the degree of regularity to which they used them. Other subs used the pens also, but HJE was the largest subcontractor.

50 and 100 watters got PCBs around April of 1980. DR201's used turret boards through the Hylight era.

Just noticed that my SA112 is the first PCB listed in Mark's registry. There are a couple of amps above it that don't declare one way or another.

Unless I read the scribbling wrong, it was inspected 15/4/80.
