UPDATE from our Hosting Company:
"...one of our main switches in one of our datacenters locked up and needed to be rebooted. When it came up, it was missing its configuration files. This caused all kinds of routing issues on our backend and resulted in many vital servers to lose their connections. Unfortunately, there was no way to recover the configs, so they had to be rebuilt from scratch."
Not a defense but, at least, an explanation. FWIW, I know of plenty of good Network Engineers looking for work. Hope our Hosting Company hires one of them in place of the derelict one that neglected to keep their switch configs up-to-date
