Hi All (This is my first post).

I am looking for information on some Fane speakes I have. They came loaded in a Selmer S412 (4x12) speaker cabinet which I believe dates to the late 70's. I would like to know if they were original to the cab and what they are rated at.

Info I have so far:
16 Ohms
The following numbers taken from the frame - 122581 & 387/77 (is that forward slash a misprinted 7?)

I have uploaded some pics which may help.

Maybe someone will have an opinion on how these compare with other vintage Fanes?

Thanks in anticipation of any help.

Hi and welcome to the Vintage Hiwatt Forum!

The date code is 38/77 (38th week of 1977). That is in keeping with some Fanes I own using the same, rather thin, stamped steel frame. That's not a negative comment, just an observation.

Can you see any numbers stamped on the cones themselves? Often times, they're up by the voice coil (on the back side).

From your picture, it's difficult to tell the magnet size. What's the diameter and would you say they're light, medium or heavy in weight?

Dave

Hi Dave - Many thanks for the speedy reply and info, very much appreciated.

Unfortunately the cab is screwed back together and back in storage where I rehearse, and I won't get access to it again until later in the month, so I can't check the cones for numbers.

However the dating information is very useful as it concurs with my research on the date of the Selmer cab which appears to be late 70's. Seems very likely that they are the original speakers.

I did take a cursory look for a number on the cones but didn't find anything, probably didn't look hard enough!

I would say the speakers seem medium weight (oh and I know what you mean about the thinness of the frames). Overall they sound pretty good, but how they compare with other Fanes I don't know, as I only have limited experience of directly listening to vintage Fane speakers! Is there a great variation in tonal characteristics with Fane speakers during the 70's?

I was told by the gent who sold me the cab that the speakers were rated at 50w each, but there was no info info on the speakers to substantiate this.

Thanks again :)

Welcome to the forum.
There is a huge variation in Fane speakers. They supplied dozens of companies with speakers.
Much more than celestion.

They should indeed be 50 watts.
