Hello. I'm somewhat a new member of this forum and I'm about to pull the trigger on a 1977-78 DR-105. I had a few questions and was wondering if you guys could help me out?

1.) What are the main differences in tone between DR105 & DR103?
2.) Is $1400 a good deal?
3.) Should I save my $1400 and put it towards a DR-103
4.) Were these amps made in Canada or England?

I have the opportunity to buy a Reeves Custom 50 for $1350 or a '78 DR105 for $1400

What would you do?

1) None, unless it has been modded. Some 2-input Canadian models were modded by the importer for more gain.
2) Depends on condition, and if it's a 2 or 4 input model. I'd say that's quite fair for an all-original, good condition, non-molested 4-holer.
3) Nothing wrong with a DR105.
4) England, for export to Canada. Minor revisions were made to the mains supply to comply with CSA standards.

I'd go for the Hylight over the Reeves.

Hylight over a so called reeves any day of the week and ten times on sunday.

It's a 2 holer.... (That's what she said)

The two input amps became the standard around 1978.

The Canadian mod, if present, is easily reversed. What you have in a DR105 is all the Hiwatty goodness of a DR103 with a fixed mains voltage and, perhaps, an Ontario Hydro sticker.

In other words, its every bit a real Hiwatt.
