76 Dr 103 Atempting to de mod

Post by Wattsup »

Hello everyone, My name is Ken and my Hiwatt is a 76 DR103 that has been modded before I bought it in about 94.
I am going to give a try removing some mods on this amp. Mods include, preamp mod, footswitchable second channel,
effects loop and a line out. I'm not happy about the Brilliant channel sound at all. First I am taking out the preamp mod,
any advice will be helpful here. I have some moderate solder skills and am aware of the safety related to tube amps.

This is link to pic http://i960.photobucket.com/albums/ae83 ... c26f56.jpg

This mod adds more gain to Brill channel and would be the reason for bad sound? Or is it to do with the second channel added?

Thanks, Ken

hi Ken,

I think we'd need more pictures to fully evaluate things, but that picture looks like an OL-style gain mod, basically just adding an extra gain stage in the preamp.

Looks like it also has a footswitchable boost and an effects loop of some description.

Wow, what a Frankenstien. It's hard to imagine anyone doing this kind of thing.

I think what you have described there is correct. I think you can remove that xicon 220k resistor on the preamp board as well.

I would gut all the added stuff and try to put it right........but that is me
