Hi guys,

this is the cab I wanna use with my DR103 #2491. 122142 speakers dated 28/79 with cone numbers 15. Perfect conditon, no coil rub. This thing is the heaviest 4x12 I own. I would have prefered the old low wattage Fanes - but this was only 500€, so I just had to go for it. I read that there's not too much difference between both... hope that is true.

What do you think about that cab and the speakers? I'm thinking about trying these Fanes in another, more lightweight and resonant rear loaded 4x12 cab with the option of an open back. Does anybody have some experience with that?

Cheers

Martin

I would try this cab thoroughly before removing the speakers. I would discourage removing the speakers.

By your description, it sounds like you have never experienced a rear loaded HIWATT cab. They are incredibly heavy and far from resonant.

Resonant may be desirable in old pine Fender cabs, but not in a HIWATT cab.

I think you're lucky to have it!

I'm with Dr.Hiwatt - leave those speakers inside that cab. Speaker cabinets should be inert, not resonant.

Crank up your amp and appreciate what you have :) .

I don't have near the experience of these guys but I did try a pair of my 122142 Fanes in a '76 non mastervolume Marshall open back combo. I was going to use a Weber Alnico Blue Dog and Silver Bell combination but thought I'd try the Fanes anyway. They sounded like ass in an open back and I was extremely surprised by that. Learned my lesson that day.

Another anecdote: Right before I sold my trusty old (sniff, sniff) MusicMan HD130 2x12 combo (loaded with Celestions) I plugged it into my SE4123... surprise, it didn't sound nearly as good as with the open-back combo speakers.

Moral of the story. Some amp/speaker combinations simply work, others don't.

HIWATT + HIWATT/Fane works. In a mighty fashion, it does. :D
