Closest speaker to the Crescendo?

Hey guys

I wonder if you could help me. I currently have a WEM cabinet that I require some speakers for. I am a Gilmour tone freak so I am after something very close to a Crescendo

As it goes, I have 2 Weber FC12s however these are the wrong ohm rating for my current amp so I am required to get a new pair.
I would buy some 16 ohm Weber Crescendos however from reading what guys say on here is that they are no the Crescendo clone holy grail I once thought they were.
So with this in mind, what speakers could you recommend for the closest Crescendo tone. I am based in the UK!

Apologies if this is in the wrong section, and thanks in advance

Phil

The Eminence Tonker is the nearest thing to a Crescendo made today.

I should say that a crescendo with a cloth dustcap.

I'll say it again (just my opinion)...

Listening to Gilmour's straight-up tone on "Take a Breath" from Live at Gdansk.... sounds just like a good ol' DR driving a good ol' Fane-loaded HIWATT cab.

Now, I have no clue as to what exactly was mic'd up for that one, but that's what I'm hearing... So if they were in fact the holy-grail CRESCENDOs, not sure what the fuss is all about.

YMMV lol

you make a very good point Michael.
the Crescendo is probably one of the most over hyped speakers in history.
They are very stiff and sterile sounding. I wish I could take back all the money I wasted on them over the years.

chalk it up to experience....

I dislike DG's OAI/Gdansk tones. Too dry and sterile and lacked PHOW that The Wall and Is There Anybody Out There had...

VPs not going into the 2x12 that Jeff is making me, Tonkers are now. Thanks for the advice!

I'd love to try the DR-Fs...

May have to buy a cab then gut the speakers as I have no need for a third cab! I'm already trying to cut down. Failing miserably.

Caveat: I like me some Pink Floyd (pre-Wall, WYWH and Animals) but I'm not a "devotee" nor have I delved into the odds & sods & bits of Gilmour's rig and/or recordings.

I'd agree about the newer stuff. But is he not using the same basic rig (purportedly) on all those?
Also, we're comparing Live at Gdansk to studio work. Is it possible the raw studio tracks sound a bit dry and sterile?

Not trying to stir anything up, just curious. :|

I think once you hear (and see) the HI-TONE 2x12 cab, you may want to sell the other one! I love mine, it's my favorite (compared to the 1x12 and 4x12).

I don't doubt that - I'll probably buy one at some stage and see if I can find room :D

Who actually knows for sure if Gilmour used/uses Crescendo's? It's a rumour, but who except himself or his tech has ever seen the insides of his cabinets? Has he been quoted saying he uses crescendo speakers? Wem cabs didn't come with those speakers as far as I know. And if they did, who says he didnt swap them out for something else? He's had those cabs for years, and he's known for experimenting..

I suppose Pete Cornish or Bob Bradshaw may know, but why would he lie?

It's not that he would lie about it, rather has it ever been confirmed by the man himself or someone close to him that he actually does use this type of speaker?
I was just wondering because of the remarks by Dr. Hiwatt, who knows Fane speakers, saying they're not exactly the holy grail of tone.
