Hi everyone !.................calling the Pro's again!

Just got a very nice DR103 , I'm on the road working and living in Hotel so I didn't have
a chance to plug it but the owner told me that it was one of the quietest amp he's ever heard
and that it sounds wonderful ,...the only issue is a scratchy treble pot when dialed.

Question is ,those Yugoslavia EI tubes are from the 80's and not the reissues from Japan , I think they are worth
about $50 a piece more or less , can they handle the high voltage plate of a Hiwatt ,anyone ever tried those ??

When you install NOS Mullards , do you really hear a big difference in tone or it's subtil ?.............Worth the $$$....

Thank's!.......................Louis

VERY nice amp, Louis!

If all is working as designed, those Ei power tubes should be fine.

Emjoy!

Thank you very much Dave !!................I looks untouched and I think
that the previous owner kept the Mullards ,...........and install NOS EI that he had.
Should sound good !!...........I'll let you know ! :D

Finaly been able to try the amp,

It is amazing !!

Very well balanced, big round bottom end ,
beautiful and very warm high and low mids,
this amp is dead silent ,so silent that you think
your on Standby , this is one of those magical
ones that you just can't stop playing!

The two things that I'd like to know is do I really
have to change the caps because of the age
even though the amp sounds good?

Also ,the Master pot start's giving sound
In a dramatic way at around two..., and not smooth
and progressively.

Thank's!

Louis

I don't see any white crusty exudate on your caps, but they are bulging.
If you aren't gigging with it regularly, then you don't have to recap it right away.

The Master Volume reacts like this because they are a Linear taper. Arguably one of the few, less than perfect design elements in a real HIWATT.

Enjoy it for what it is as it is a beauty!

Thank you Doc!

That this is my second 4 holer and the first one was a 1976 50 watt
and it stayed clean with almost no breack up just like
a Twin Reverb on Steroids would do ,....
and this one that I have now seem's to want to roar with big fat juicy
fedbacks when cranked , even my 1981 2 holer couldn't
do that ,..........why such a diffence in tone and warmness
between those amps ?

Thank's,.....................Louis

I've recorded my first sample yesterday night
and sorry for the image cause I don't know
yet how to do it right , you hear my strumming cause
I was beside the Iphone and lack of experience
with this.

It was recorded at low volumes with a Rocket Animal
pushing a Fuzz Face and a Univibe

It's not the usual Kerrang sound but that will
come as soon as I get my Hiwatt cab and an
attenuator , I still had fun exploring different
avenues!

The Mid 70's DR504 clone I built in the vids runs a pair of the same EI EL34 output tubes------- they've held up well and as for the tone-- decide for yourself-----my friend playing his Strat through this amp in my messy shop:

http://youtu.be/EF1fWpIM6Ts

Please excuse the addition of a clone amp in this forum (even though the amp can't be seen in the vids)----- my intention was to provide evidence that the EI EL34's do work well in Hiwatt (or Hiwatt type) amps----- delete if you feel it is necessary................................gldtp99

Thank's Goldtop !........................nice vid !

My amp sound very good and warm without any harshness whatsoever ,I even have to bring up the treble and presence for more clarity,
I'm very happy with those tubes and with the amp !! , I know that some of them were not good according to this quote from a site ,

Quote,

EL34 EI Yugoslavia 6CA7

A lot of these tubes were very problematic, more than 60% of regular production was under dissipation ratings,
but some rare examples, carefully tested are great, sonicaly and by dissipation.
I have two batches, one is year 1987 and another is 1988.
This is killer EL34 to any new production like JJ, Electro-Harmonix, Genalex-Gold Lion, Svetlana, Mullard, Shuguang, Tung-Sol, … EL34 6CA7 KT77.
They have been made in 80s, when EI factory has made million of tubes on monthly basis with strict quality control, tubes were printed depends on order,
for many world famous tube brands like Siemens, Philips, Telefunken, RCA, Marshal, Jadis, Valvo, RTC, ….....................End of Quote !
