Long an inspiration, he helped make the bass a melodic instrument - as opposed to a tuned bass drum.

Agreed.

Saw Yes in concert a few times back in the 70's. Spent a lot of (pleasant) time listening to their first 5 albums.

Hasn't been a good couple of years for influential bass guitar players :( .
