Does anyone know what these speakers are?

Post by lffish133 »

I have been talking to a guy who is selling a 4x12 HIWATT cab, he says it is all original, unfortunately there are no stickers on the speakers and no identification tag on the back of the cab either. He sent me these pictures of the speakers: http://s282.photobucket.com/albums/kk24 ... er%20Pics/, can anyone tell what these speakers are? They look similar to the speaker on MHuss's site: http://mhuss.com/Hiwatt/dates.html, dated 13th week of 1977, but I'm still not sure. I was hoping the experts could help me out  Thanks

They are fanes. model 125155. The frames look to be transitional or surplus from another company they absorbed.
They were used in the front loaded cabs. They look to be the originals for that cab.

How do they compare to the classic 122142 Fane? Do they have the same spec?

I don't know the spec on the 125155, but I do know that they sound quite different than 122142s and 122231s when rear loaded.

I suspect that these speakers were voiced for the front loaded cabs.

Bring it to the Convention and we can A/B them!!

I've got a quad of 122142's with similar frames (well, 3 out of the 4 are - the 4th has silver paint). They've got purple HIWATT stickers on the magnet covers. They also came in a front-loaded cab.

Do you have a chance to hear these or is this a long distance deal?

Unfortunately the cab is in Montreal so I would get it shipped out here. He also said he has a buyer coming to pick it up tomorrow for $750, so it looks like I am outta luck, how do these front loaders compare sound wise to the rear loaders? I know everything is personal preference but what do you like better OldSchool?

Both styles are very good. Obviously, the rear-loaded / rear-ported models represent the original design and carry some mystique. Having a couple of each, I wouldn't shy away from front-loaded / front-ported cabs at all. They seem a bit tighter and more focused, though that could be a function of the particular speakers. It's also easier to swap out speakers through the front and you don't have to worry about the bolt centers not lining up.

In short, keep your fingers crossed that the other deal falls through and you get a second shot at that cab!
