Strange PCB in DR-103

Post by Lancia3 »

Hi!
I´m Michele from Italy. I have in shop a Hiwatt DR-103 from 1978. I have open the amp for a small service and i notice a small PCB board that I think is unusual for an Hylight era amp.
Can someone help me to understand this MOD?

Thank you so much!

Michele

Hi Michele!

I was able to access the images if I copied and pasted them from the "Reply" window. Let's see if these direct links work better:

That is very unusual. Instead of the Turret Strip in the Input section, there are two smaller boards, one with turrets, the other a blank drilled for the components. I would not call those PCB, as they do not appear to have their routing etched in place. I have not seen this on any vintage HIWATT, but the components appear to be era-correct. Dr.HI-TONE, have you run across something like this?

Ah, that would explain it.

Oh yes. Do you think this mod was made by Hiwatt? Because i see same component, same wire, same paint on the solder point. I think that someone in the recent past modified one more time this amp.
This amp sounds good and with no Hum but a little dummy compared to my Dr-504 replica.

I am fairly confident that this amp in this current state was not made by HIWATT.
Much of the wiring and components are not original.

I agree. Although the PCB-mounted parts look period-correct, I'm sure if Hiwatt did the conversion, they be using a turret board, not a PCB.
