SE4121 - Speaker Enclosure 4x12 version 1
- 22w Fane drivers #122141, 14,000 gauss.
- 16ohm 150 watt rating.
- short lived as the 22w drivers could not handle the power of DR103's

SE4122 - Speaker Enclosure 4x12 version 2
- 50w Fane drivers #122142, 17,000 gauss
- 16ohm 150 watt rating

SE4123 - Speaker Enclosure 4x12 version 3
- 50w Fane drivers #122231, 14,000 gauss
- 16ohm 100 watt rating

This is good from 1969 through 1978. When I get the time I will copy the pages of the Fane ledger, but don't hold your breath!

Later Hylight Hiwatt FANE models include:

125114 and 125155.

Will post specs, if I can find any.

Dave

EDIT: Forgot the 122918 (cast frame from 1980).

P.S. Good idea JC103!

The 122231 and 122142 could be either. it depends on the date. and there was no distinct transition date. I have steel frame 122231 from 02/74 and aluminum frame 122231 from 26/74.

122142 cast up to early 1974

why the difference in overall rating between the 4122 and the 4123 if both cabs have 50 watt fanes?

are they both more realistically 200 watt cabs?

They are HIWATT 100 watt cabs. Back in the day Marshall would rate their amps at maximum watts, where HIWATTs were rated at watts before clipping. So while on paper a 4x12 cab with 50 watt drivers wired series-parallel would have a 200 watt rating, it is really only recommended for 100w. of HIWATT power.

While both 122231 and 122142 are excellent for guitar,
the 122142 drivers are better for bass than the 122231.

updated to add:
122231 with stamped/pressed steel frames as early as the second week of 1974
125161 50 watts 16ohm.
used for approx. 6 months in early-mid 1978 replacing 122231 in rear loaded SE4123 cabs and in a few front loaded cabs.

is the 122142 a 55hz cone and 122231 75hz cone? Or am I way off? I'm fairly new to Fanes and want to get something a bit darker for my Sound City L100.

Nope. They actually used the same cone through most of the production. The larger magnet apparently accounted for the tonal difference.

Thanks Dave. So which 50w Fanes should I look into for a slightly darker sound than the others? Is the 122142 Fane easier on the highs and more focused on the lows, making it "better for bass" as posted above?

Thanks. Just trying to tame the highs a little on my L100 and/or B100. One will be pairing up with a M55/M75 Scumback loaded 4x12.

Look for some 122142's - or even some of the later "Legend Series" Fanes (although they don't have a standard bolt pattern).

Dave

P.S. Toward the end of the Hylight era (generally coinciding with the release of front loaded cabs), Hiwatt Fane models were 125114 and 125155. I might have it backwards, but I think the 125114 was the replacement for the 122142. Judges?
