Re: Hiwatt DR 103 with NOS EI EL34 ??
The Mid 70's DR504 clone I built in the vids runs a pair of the same EI EL34 output tubes------- they've held up well and as for the tone-- decide for yourself-----my friend playing his Strat through this amp in my messy shop: http://youtu.be/KL9pWc57Q-M http://youtu.be/EF1fWpIM6Ts Please excuse the...

Re: First post and first hiwatt..
The late Hylight DR103 i used to own had the same PCB's-- it also had some of the same heat/smoke damage (but not as severe) on the poweramp PCB----- pics are after my repairs: http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f112/gldtp99/DR103/HiwattDR103001.jpg http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f112/gldtp99/DR10...

Re: Hiwatt Gurus: Help your friend Bob!
Low voltages and loud humming/blown fuse suggest power supply fault---- check for blown rectifier diode(s) and/or bad filter caps.....................gldtp99
PS-- if you're not sure how to do these checks--- then by all means take it over to Savage

Re: Hiwatt Gurus: Help your friend Bob!
Since you've already tried different sets of output tubes----- and all have normal plate voltage but no current draw----#1) see if the Screen Grid resistors have failed--if screen grid resistors measure ok and screen grid voltage is good (close to plate voltage) on the tube socket pins (pin 4)--- th...

Re: DR504 output impedance : 4-8-16 ohms ?
Yes i've seen this in DR504's, too----- 16 and 8 ohm taps are twisted pairs---- no 4 ohm tap---- 4 and 8 ohm tabs on switch connected together. So only three sets of wires coming from OT secondary: 16 ohm tap, 8 ohm tap, and Common. I sometimes get to work on real Hiwatts--- not just my clones and S...

I was just looking at this auction and figured it was being discussed here------ What a Mess !!! At least it seems to still have a Partridge OT----- they drilled right thru the Model/Serial # plate on the back for whatever screwy mod they did----- super nice "original covering", too. If th...

Re: experts??
The PCB DR504 that didn't even get an opening bid of $1000 won't be re-listed---- i made arrangements with the owner to get it myself-----i won't be selling it----- a Hylight Hiwatt for a little more than what it would cost me to build a DR504 clone ? Heck yes, i got it !!!! Even though it's a PCB t...

Re: experts??
It sounds like gldtp99 (member here) did the bias mod on that one. Maybe he knows a bit more about this particular unit. Yes, i did the adj bias mod on this one---- i put a trim pot in series with the orig bias resistor---- also installed/biased the JJ E34L's------- i put in two nice USA pre tubes ...
