Reeves 2x12 or the JCM 800 Split Cab

Post by Samuel »

Hey Guys,
I’m trying to decide whether or not to purchase one of the Reeves 2x12 ported cabs with the vintage purples to match up with my DR504 head. I currently have a Marshall JCM cabinet that is split with 2 old 70’s celestions on one side and 2, G12T75 on the other which are ice picky sounding.

Would there be any tone benefit to buying the Reeves 2x12 with the VP’s or should I just replace a couple of the speakers in the JCM cab with some fane reissues? Cabinet weight is not an issue as it doesn’t get moved too much, just wanted the best tone.
Thanks for the recommendations
Sam

Personally I'd probably just load the Marshall cab with new Fanes, but I've heard great things about the Reeves 2 12 cabinets too. You could also get one of the HiTone cabs, I've heard great things about those too. The only thing I've actually used are the new Fane speakers which I love, I haven't tried them in a Marshall cabinet though. Phil

I am biased, but the HI-TONE 2x12 is not only less expensive, but the DR-F's are much less muffled/muddy sounding than the VP's

HI-TONE, when only the best will do.

I'm not an impartial observer either, but I really love playing through my HI-TONE DR-F loaded 2x12 (it's the one in my avatar). I power it with a 50 watt Hiwatt combo head.

I've had guys I played with say; "good gig" or "sounded good tonight" before but, the last few gigs with this rig, out of the blue, the guys are saying; "that f#@kin' amp sounds GREAT!".

Who am I to argue ;) ?

...Hey! I played that song when it was new...

I own both (well mine is a 4 x 12) so I will not claim any bias. I will tell you flat out the HiTone cabinet is hands down the better choice.

Yeah. The HITONE 2x12 is outstanding. Best 2x12 I've ever played.
