Fane 122231 impedance in a 4x12

Post by pet0r »

I'm thinking of buying a Hiwatt SE4123 cabinet with Fane's in it. They are 122231 type speakers, 15 ohm impedance as indicated on the little green stickers.
I measured the total impedance of the cab with a short lead and a multimeter, and expected to measure around 12 to 14 ohm.
But the dmm only read 10.2 ohm. Is this good/normal, or does it indicate a problem with the speakers? The cab did sound good, no obvious faults.
All wiring seemed original and untouched.

Any advice would be appreciated!
Thanks

Good evening, pet0r...
Without going into details, there is a difference between 'impedance' and 'resistance'; 10.2 ohm resistance would be entirely normal for a cab with an impedance of 16 ohm. No worries there. Others will doubtless chip in with questions on other details, but it seems OK to me. We can explain more technically if you insist..!
Hope this helps...
Have a good day.

pet0r,

While that's slightly lower than I would expect as well, if all cones were moving and sounding good, you should be o.k..

Double check the wiring to be sure something didn't get crossed along the way.

some of my vintage cabs are in the 10ohm range when measured with a DMM.

No Worries, if it sounds good, go for it!
