1976 Hiwatt DR-504 eBay listing. I want it buy it but....

Post by Voddi78 »

Though they listed it from 1976, it's actually from 1977 according to the serial number (#10080). I want to pull the trigger on it but here's where the "but" comes in.

1. In the descripton, it was stated that the transformer was replaced in 2001. You can see it in one of the photos.

2. If you look closely at the speaker output jacks, output #1 is missing the plastic nut. Again, you can see it in of the pics.

With these two things, does anyone think that $1,399.99 seems like a reasonable price or is that a bit too high? Although I have a 1982 Hiwatt DR-103 Biacrown head & Hiwatt DR-103 clone that I picked up on Craigslist a while back, a 50 watt head is what I really want.

The output transformer is the most important IMO, and that still looks original.

You can get a replacement nut for the output jack easily enough.

$1400 seems a little high to me in the current market, given the PT is not original.

That's what holding me back. Even though the output transformer isn't original, it'd be more of a player's amp rather than a collector's amp. Think I should still jump on it regardless of the price or should I haggle the seller & see if the seller will take a reasonable offer (if they're willing)? I look at it this way, it's a real Hiwatt. A new Hiwatt DR-103 would set me back around $3,400. The Hi-Tone DR504 Custom 50 (Sozo caps) is priced at $2,050 & The Reeves Custom 50 is going for $1,899.

I would not give over $1000.00 for the hacked HIWATT. Decent ones with both original transformers have been going cheap.

Be careful with generalizations, listing a HI-TONE in with amps that are vaguely HIWATT inspired........that is fighting words.

HI-TONE, when only the best will do.

Thank you Dr. HIWATT. I'll wait until this auction ends & see if it'll come down to under $1k, unless some fool ends up buying it.

Fighting words? Well guess what? I'm coming after you with an army of Sound City amps! The amp that everyone wants! I just had to say that. :)

But you are right. Buying a new Hiwatt is out of the question since they're not the same plus I heard about the quality issues. And I'll admit, I thought about getting a Reeves Amp at one point in time but something told me not too. Then I found Vintage Hiwatt Restorations & that was it.

Please forgive me Dr. HIWATT. I will NEVER mention Reeves Amplification or the new Hiwatt amps on this forums ever again & will not purchase them in the future. I promise.

Well, it looks like some unfortunate soul ended up buying the amp a few weeks back.

But in the meantime, I'll still keep a lookout for a used DR-504. Hope I snag one. And if I don't then a Hi-Tone DR-504 or a DR-307 is in the future. :)

I've got a DR-504 I might be willing to let go. It's from 1981 I believe. Serial # 14939. It's a 2 Input model. I believe it has all of the original parts, but I haven't disassembled it to check. The only thing it's missing is the back plate. I don't have any great pictures of it right now, but if you're interested and we're in the same ballpark price-wise, I'll get some pictures for you.

Finman76, according to the website, http://hiwatt.org/dates.html , your Hiwatt appears to be very late 1980. I'm assuming that it's a Hylight amp & it must be hand-wired. How much would you be willing to sell the amp for? Whereabouts are you located?

Sorry it took me so long to respond. I guess I didn't subscribe to the thread. It has an inspected date sticker on it that says 3/9/80. It's the PCB version, but it is Hylight and still has the original transformers. I'm in Nashville. I would sell it for $1200 if you're interested. Let me know before it goes up on flea-bay

Must have been a run of DR504 (for Canada?) around that time. I have #14872, inspection sticker 27/8/80. Very nice amp - especially after removing the importer gain mod. Nothing wrong with the PCB models tone-wise, just not as collectible.
