Boost pedals

Post by MrMojo »

Looking at possibly getting a boost pedal to help with lead after switching from rhythm. Some list gains of up to 25db. Would this stress the preamp of my Hylights? Do any other pedal present similar issues? Thanks in advance for any info.

I can't imagine a pedal that could stress a preamp any more than creating more gain or tonal muddy-ness than you may want.

Certainly not enough stress to damage anything, if that is what you may be asking?

Mark is familiar with many more pedals than me, maybe he will speak to this, next time he logs in.

HI-TONE, when only the best will do.

Thanks Clayton, from what I have read, not a whole lot of wattage is involved, maybe a 1/16th of a watt for 21db. I have read that older amps with 'grid leak bias input' stages can be damaged. Me, not knowing what that is, I thought I would post

I have never had any trouble hitting the front end of a Hiwatt with a boost ... but I do recall being advised to avoid the 'smoke on the water' effect of hitting the front end of a stock Marshall Major with pedals

I use a TriBoost, but any clean MOSFET booster works well. Boosters won't hurt anything in the amp.
