WTB Fane 122879D for SA112

Post by malcomyoung »

Hello,
I am new to this forum. I just bought a used SA112 which has a non-original speaker. I am hoping to return the amp to stock. I read in an old Hiwatt catalogue that the SA112 came stock with a Fane 122879D. I believe it's rated at 75w? Does anyone have one they'd be willing to sell me? Or does anyone know a suitable replacement? I've read about the Weber Thames, but don't know much about them.
Any help in this matter is much appreciated.
Thanks,
Phil

Welcome to the Vintage HIWATT Forum.

Congrats for buying a SA112. I have a Fane from a late 1970's SA112 in storage, I'll try to get to it.

The Weber Thames is a poor substitute for a HIWATT Fane. I have read the same crap on the web before and those comments are clearly written by those with little HIWATT experience. Weber made some great Jensen and Celestion style speakers, but the attempts at Fanes really miss the mark.

The Eminence Tonker is closer, but not great, the Tonker lite is better still and may be your best bet in a heavy combo.

Thanks for the info. Good to know about the Weber Fane copy. It's always hard to know based on what you read on the Weber website. Let me know if you decide you want to sell your speaker.

FWIW, my 1980 SA112 came with a model 122918 Fane. As Dr.Hiwatt aluded to, the amp and large magnet speaker is heavy as heck!

Dave
...Hey! I played that song when it was new...

Good to know. So much to learn.
I don't mind the weight so much. It'll just be living in my studio.

I'm now running an emminence Lynch V12 in mine. Best I've had in there after repairing the original ATC for the third time.

I just got the SA112 up and running. It's loaded with a Mesa Boogie Black Shadow and I'm actually liking the way it sounds. I have no idea how it would compare to the original Fane speaker, but I'm thinking I might stick with this, at least for the time being.

I had an FL112 with a Black Shadow once - in my experience, it sounded better with almost everything. :D

Do you still have that pulled speaker, Doc??
