Interesting SE4121 on Ebay

Post by shakti »

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1971-Hiwatt-d ... 0503073%26

I'm sure I'm not the only one who's intrigued by these early cabs...this is a herringbone SE4121. Serial # in the 1100s. Interestingly it's a closed back cab, which is consistent with the few other herringbone cabs I've seen. Seller says the non-Hiwatt labeled Fanes are 12289, which is close in model # to the 12287s found in early Sound City cabs.

Discuss.

That's excellent information! That means the speakers in my 69ish SC cab are almost certainly the exact same (12287) as in early SE4122s. It also looks like at least the herringbone cabs were closed back. Still curious to find out when the first ported cabs appeared.

Is it safe to assume these were the speakers used in SE4121 and SE4122 cabs respectively, until the introduction of the 122142 and 122231 speakers around 1971?

I don't know for certain.
It is a good educated guess.

Just for reference...do you have the approval dates for 122141, 122142 and 122231 as well?

yep.

122141, 122142
3, january 1969
these have a higher resonance than the 12287,12289 probably due to a different cone
pulsonic 1021/015

122231
6, may 1971
also 1021/015

Further to this...these speakers on Ebay look to me like very early 122142s:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/271171384464? ... 1555.l2649

Why I think they are an early model is that they have no date code on the tag, a green front gasket, and a small dustcap. 1021/024 cone, which is different than the spec you have for it, Dr Hiwatt?
What's interesting is that these *appear* identical to the Sound City 12287 speakers I have, except for the cone #. Same small dustcap, no doping and same green front gasket.

Later 122142s I have seen have a black front gasket, typically a date code on the inspection tag, a larger dustcap and (presumably) a taller voice coil former (hence the larger dustcap?). Like this pair:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/360602830541? ... 1423.l2649
These do however have a 1021/015 cone...
